Rim Staining

I did a quick search but didn't come up with anything conclusive. My FX just came back from detail, and well, I am a little disappointed how the 21" rims still have stains on them......most likely from brake dust I would guess. It appears that this staining is maybe in the clear coat? Is there a clear coat on our rims?

What do you guys do to try and restore the rim to new ?

Thanks !

I had some staining on my wheels when I bought it. It looked like some type of solution dripped from the tire. I tried everything to get if off to no avail. (Don't try a magic eraser!) I ended up having them refinished for $70 a wheel.

Thanks,
Never tried a Clay bar before. Maybe I will give it a whirl.

I believe they do have a clear coat. They are probably stained from a corrosive cleaner used in the past and brake dust build up. I always use a good wheel sealant to protect my wheel ((Poor Boys Wheel Sealant or Wheelwax)

They probably used a general wheel cleaner on it which you aren't supposed to do with our 21's... probably ate through the clear coat and ruined it. This is what happened to mine and led me to paint them a custom color...

Brake dust can be brutal. Try Sonax, apply it to a cool wheel only. It will turn purple then you can rinse it off. Safe for all wheels, works wonders.

Hey beelove, who refinished your wheels? Someone local?

Infiniti North Shore had them done for me. They have a couple of gentlemen that come to the dealership on a specific day of the week and do it in their truck. I tracked them down this past fall when I wanted to see if I could get one of my Vossens that my wife curbed fixed. They were over at Concours BMW and were fixing a bunch of OEM wheels. I wasn't really convinced they could fix the polished stainless, but they did do a decent job on my 21's. BTW do you usually go to North Shore? If so, do you see any difference with the ownership change? I miss Safro.

Nice, i'll have to check them out.

North Shore is my dealer, plus it's only about 3 minutes from my house, so that helps. I was a little worried when International took over, but I've still had good experiences with the service department so far. Safro was always awesome.
