Removing Chrome from Grill

So I am painting my grill black mainly because the chrome started to bubble as was spreading like wild fire. So I am in the process of removing the chrome and what a pain in the A$$!! Any one have any suggestions? Currently I am just peeling it off bit by bit as sanding does not seem to be making a dent through the chrome. What recommendations do you have for me to talk me off the ledge!
If sanding is the option what grit would you start with to get the chrome down. I am good once I get down to the plastic but getting there is seeming to drive me mad!

Thanks

There is a place by me that does plating and polishing
I have sent them all my chrome plastic trim for them to chemically remove the chrome before painting
Maybe you could see if there are any places like that near you

I don't think you need to get all the chrome off. You can paint over the chrome if it's sanded enough for the paint to stick. The issue would be to sand off all of the areas where the chrome isn't sticking too well. Otherwise, it would peel and bubble under the paint.
