Just joined over from the FX.org...

Does anyone recommend a Los Angeles shop/person to get the following done, and estimated prices?

1. powdercoat the lips of my 22" D-forged DF-1's glossy black (I currently have powercoated glossy black rims, chrome lip)
2. paint a gunmetal line on the lip
3. paint the grill glossy black
4. paint the headlight housing flat black (oh where did caskyline go?)
5. new tires: currently have 285/35/22. looking to go 265/40/22, but I forgot if my rims were 22x10 or 22x11. I'm trying to figure out how to measure my rim width, let me know if you have any good ways to do this...

first off, welcome to iS (say hi in the newbie section)

You might have to spear head the projects yourself, I dont know a shop that will do ALL you listed. But if you gave me enough money I couold get it done for you.
I took my stock rims to Reliable Powder Coating in Downey http://maps.google.com/maps/place?h...ating&hnear=downey+ca&cid=3243452710081391858

if you have a 10-11" rims then running 265 would be stretching it, use the tire calculator located under "members" on the top toolbar
where in LA are your at?

hey, I think I answered your post on the .org and I included a picture as well there. It's not LA but in Orange County, they do good work...

Yah, thanks. I don't know how many people cross post, so I gave it a shot here too.

This place was recommended at $150-$200 a wheel: fastforwardwheels.com (Sorry, I can't post links yet)

I'm still searching for other options...

I ran it through the tire calc: gives a width of 10.4 for the tires. I prob have to go 305/35 then, but it costs double (T_T)

I'm in Hollywood & SouthBay.

Forward me the contact for someone who would do the grill and headlights? I can't seem to find caskyline's contact info... I can then do the wheels elsewhere...

Man, not a lot of activity on the other forum...

Here's a cross post for anyone who recommends a good wheel shop to disassemble/reassemble near LA.

=========================
Man... time flies...

My tires wore out until they popped, so I decided to finally upgrade the rims.

Did my share of research, and found out it will cost me a lot more $$$ because of the current powder/chrome that is currently on it, and because they are 3 piece.

Most shops, including fastforward wheels, were quoting 250-300 per wheel to strip the chrome from the lip, remove the existing powdercoat from the face, disassemble/reassemble, and apply new powdercoat.

I found a good shop (Embee Powdercoat) would do the powder for $90 per wheel, but they don't disassemble/reassemble. I'm still looking for a place to for this, and it's not cheap either, $50-$100 per wheel... Let me know if anyone knows a good place which does good work for a reasonable price!!!

I'm planning to do a matte black face (Embee has a teflon coated matte which repels dust), with glossy lip. Wanted to do the bolts in gunmetal, but I can't find a place to do it yet.

Here's a matte black/gloss black combo:

Sounds pricey but these people do awesome work. I had a set of porsche wheels sent to them before I even saw them in person. They painted them flat black and added a pinstripe.. Awesome detail.

I cant add pictures, unfortunately.

Once I told them I had 3 piece rim which needed chrome to be stripped, they said it'll be $250-300 a wheel. Too expensive for me...

20x10, 265 all around, and it does not look stretch at all. theres still some bulge actually

Thank for the lead, Jakz.

They gave me a good price: $750 to strip chrome, powdercoat lips gloss black, face matte black, disassemble/reassemble. ~$187/wheel without the hassle of driving back and forth between Gardena & Santa Ana.

How much did they charge you for the grill?

No Prob franx , I knew it they would give you a good price, you wont regret it they do a perfect job, and for my grill i paid 100$, but it depends they will give you a list of black colors you want to go with like gloss black, satin black, flat...etc, 80-120$

Here's the update, and it does include some drama...

Wheels are done and they look good:

IMG-20110224-00003.jpg

Pick up wheels, go to America's Tires to mount tires. Drive 5 blocks and one of my tires is flat :eek.:

Go back to tire shop. They dunk the wheel and say it's not the tire, instead the rim is leaking :mad.:

Next day go back to AKA. Off the bat, they are very defensive about the situation. When I initially decided to go with this shop, they said they work on numerous 3 piece wheels and that any problems I have, they will fix free. Now there is resistance to have them fix the issue. They agree to reseal the the rim for free.

Head back to shop next week. They say they found more issues; there is a crack in the rim. I'm not happy :bomb::bomb::bomb:

If I gave them 4 rims which did not have a crack, and now they find one of them is cracked, the crack therefore has to come from their work. They deflect all blame, drama ensues.

Compromise is met; they will weld and repowdercoat the rims at their cost. ~$200.

Pick up the rim later. They try to charge me an add'l disassembly/reassembly fee. I'm not happy again. Drama ensues. They waive it.

Conclusion: AKA does decent work for decent price. However if anything goes wrong, they are less than helpful and will strongly resist. I would not recommend them to anybody else.
