Possible starter motor issue

As of a couple of months ago the car would sometimes not start up or crank at all. Dash lights come on, you hear a click, but nothing after that. So sometimes I have to turn everything off and try a couple of times before the engine cranks and starts. I know its not the battery because I have replaced it in January and it passes all tests with flying colors.

A local mechanic said the starter motor has to be replaced and quoted ~$1100CAD for part and labor (which is about $850 US, not including the Canadian tax of course)
I looked up this forum and found: 3.5L - starter broke

I would like to know::
- How can I make sure it actually is the starter motor?
- What is the test to make sure the solenoid is not bad (though I gather the clicking sound means the solenoid works?)
- How involved is it to replace the starter motor?

Thanks
