Parking sensors are ineffective for detecting objects in the centre

The rear parking sensors on my 3 week old 09 fx35 only detect objects that are at the corners. I backed straight into a metal pipe that was dead centre to the rear bumper and the sensors didnt make a sound. There is a rear camera but i was relying on the outer rear view mirrors. Has any one installed extra sensors at the rear? If so how?

If you look at the sensors they are pointing out to cover your corners.
You have the front and rear camera for center obstacles.
I find it quite decent.

I think the camera is meant to replace the need for more sensors and the corner sensors are there more to assist the camera in hard to view angels like the corners. It sounds like you had a unfortunate incident and did not look in the camera view before proceeding in reverse. But to answer your question I have not seen or heard of anyone installing additional aftermarket reverse sensors.

hey, yeah, the camera is there for a reason. it is hard to see the corners int he camera so there are sensors there for that reason, otherwise you really should rely on the camera for backing up it's pretty helpful.
