Paint Scratch Repair? (Picture Inside)

Hey guys,

I scratched up my paint on the side of my garage the other day, it's kind of hard to see in the picture, but it's right below the door handle. They are long horizontal scratchs over a large area. The specks that you see are micro-paint chips that are going through to the bare metal. I tried to use some chip doctor repair but i think the chips are too small for the paint to stick into. Any advice on what I should do? How much would a good repair cost at a body shop? Before I make it to the body shop or do repairs myself, what can I do to make sure it doesnt rust? Thanks!

you can order a touch up pen, like a sharpie from www.automotivetouchup.com.
Wet sand with 1500-2000 grit paper the scratches to remove them and give the clear coat a smooth finish. when done wet sanding and it looks good, buff it out with rubbing compound to bring back the shine. When it looks good, degrease and clean the area with all the paint chips and dab the pen in each hole/chip. kind of build it up, so 1 dab, wait a few minutes, 2nd dab, wait a few minutes and so on until the paint from the pen is somewhat leveled with the rest of the paint job.
Let it set overnight and next day using 2000 grit paper gently sand the area to even out the "bumps", buff it out, wax and should look better. Eventually if it bothers you, you might wanna get it repainted. Depending on the area the paint job can run you anywhere from $250 - $500.

Hey thank you so much for that helpful write-up, this is definately something I will try. I think that 250-500 would be worth it to me but maybe ill try the sanding to see what it looks like first.

I have the nissan touch up pen, but it doesnt look like a sharpie, more like a ballpoint pen. Would that work? Thanks again!!!

I would try compund/sanding before touching up. It doesn't look too deep.
