I have a 2005 FX35 with about 120k miles; it's actually a new car (to me). Went to test drive it 3 separate times and never noticed a single issue, brought it home and it was great for the first 3 days. Then, I noticed one day that the A/C started blowing warmer, more humid air randomly. Coming from a Mazda3 to the FX and not being used to this kind of set up for the AC system, I thought that I just accidentally pressed something as it started blowing cold air again after about 3 minutes. Unfortunately, it would continue to do this every day after that. Sometimes it would blow the warm, humid air for 1 minute, sometimes it would blow it for upwards of 20 minutes. Sometimes it would only do it once a day, sometimes it would do it 5 times. There was no rhyme or reason to it at all. When it was blowing cold air, it was ICE cold!
I took the car back to the dealership where I got it (not an infiniti dealer), and since I'm 7.5 months pregnant, they felt bad and I truly feel they wanted to help, even though their cars would typically be sold as-is. We agreed to use a third-party for the repairs and they came back saying that the system had very little charge and needed to be recharged. They also said that there was an issue with the condenser and that it needed to be replaced, along with a hose (I have no idea which one or any of the details on that. I do have the receipt that contains the warranty for these new parts I just don't have it with me at the moment.)
So, they did all that and I got my car back. On my (very long, I might add) drive home from getting my car back, I had the A/C on the recirculation mode (I always do, I live in a city with over 10 chemical plants, so fresh air is just not an option) and noticed that the car was switching to fresh air on its own, then back to recirculated, and so on and so on. It kept going. Even if I pressed it back to recirc, it would change whenever it felt like.
That was about two weeks ago. I haven't had the original intermittent air issue, so technically they did fix that, but I know that the car shouldn't be switching these settings like it is. In the past few days I've noticed that it only switches settings if I've been driving for awhile. This has also caused me to realize that if I'm just driving around town, the air is NOT as cold as it used to be (it's definitely cool air and not the warm humid like before) and I know it CAN get colder because eventually after a lot of driving, it will get ice cold again and THIS is what triggers the car to switch settings, as best I can tell. Today, I drove 40 miles and felt that the air wasn't as cold as it should be, and had no switch in the settings. On my way home, another 40 mile drive, toward the end of the drive the air started getting much much colder and low and behold, it switched itself to fresh air, which makes it get a little less cold, and then switched itself right back to recirc.
I do have the opportunity to take it back to the shop who did the initial repair, but its a very very long drive for me and I want to go into this with some idea of what this could be. I was already under the impression that the dealer was paying for the initial repair, but they requested I pay half once I got there to pick it up. So, I'm already not too happy about the whole situation.
Does anyone have ANYYYYY idea what could be going on with my car to cause it be switching settings/not getting cold like it should? (remember: the initial intermittent a/c issue is not occurring anymore, at least not yet.)
EDIT: I know the car has an auto feature for the A/C, but I don't have it set to that. The mechanic who worked on it tried to tell me over the phone that because auto is even an option with this car, it is supposed to be switching like this. But, after reading the owner's manual, I don't believe that to be true. And also, it never switched modes like this in the two weeks I drove it with the intermittent a/c issue.
