Hey Fellas,
I know this subject has been up many times and been going through them one by one but here's my situation. I live in the Gulf (Bahrain) and temperatures reach sky high to 122 F++ at times! The average temps here during summer are 105 F and above. I usually use synthetic oil be it Mobil 1 or Castrol edge but a local mechanic was telling me it's too light for the temperatures here so i figured i'd take a trip down to the dealership and this is what they gave me :bad: Now after using it I do get that annoying tapping/ knocking noise during warm up. Ideas?

Regardless of the ambient (within reason) the engines thermostat should control the jacket water temperature to 220/240 F warm which means the oil temperature as well. With your high ambient temperatures you could use the higher weight oils as your engine is still "warm" in the morning when you first start the car. I would go with a SAE 15W40 full synthetic year round.

If you get tapping after swapping to that, likely the 20W is still too "heavy" even with the high ambient temps there. I would just stick with what you were using or any high quality synthetic. You're concerned about the oil breaking down at high temperatures, and any good synthetic will be fine. They all have a similar breakdown temperature which is very high so even with 120+ temperature, they'll perform similarly. ie, Mobil1 isn't going to fail before Castrol.

Thanks guys, it's always good to have people online to consult with! So it's either 0w40 or 15w40 which should be good.

Shoot didn't see this til now. I already got the 0w40 but the good news is no more ticking in the morning. I'll get the 15W40 next oil change. Thanks guys

0w40 shouldn't be that expensive, although I don't know if your location makes a difference. The 5 qt jug I got was $25 +$2 tax on Amazon.

0w-40 is only 26 bucks at walmart for 5 quart jug. Reason i said 0w-40 is because the additives they have in the oil works really well in high temperature climate. Friends of mine dumped stock castrol 10w-60 on their M3s and went with 0w-40 without any issues. Im assuming 5w-40 would work the same but stick to #w-40 oils

not counting how most European cars use 0w-40 mobil 1, for example porsche cayenne turbo s
