Hey to everyone!
We just purchase a new (to us) 2017 QX80 AWD and are loving the luxury features!
I look forward to reading, and sharing, experiences/tips.

I do have one quick question that I can't find an answer for in the owner's manual. I'll post a question in the appropriate forum if I don't get an answer here - just didn't want to clutter up the forum if it was a really easy answer.

On the outside of the liftgate, there is a little round button, next to the big rectangular button that opens the liftgate, that I can find absolutely no function for. Does anyone know what this switch does?

It works just like the unlock button on the front door handles, but ONLY if you have the intelligent key on you (just like the front doors). I guess the times I tried it, I didn't have the key on me, so it did nothing.
It was seriously eating at my brain....THANKS!

Now I'm wondering why it's there....you can open the liftgate by just pressing it's button if you have the key on you.
Maybe for folks coming out of the grocery store with kids, you can unlock the doors for them while you load the groceries in the back?
Or I guess if you're taking stuff out of the back and want to lock the doors, you don't have to walk all the way around to one of the front doors, or dig the key fob out of your pocket, to lock them.....
 
I have a similar button on my QX70 but I’ve never really messed with it. If my car is unlocked anyone can open the hatch. I assumed it allowed someone w/out a fob the ability to lock the hatch from the outside?

although your commentary indicates otherwise…?
 
I'm guessing the QX70 is the same as the QX80. If you don't have the key fob on you, the button does nothing. If the doors are locked, it won't unlock them; if the doors are unlocked, it won't lock them. Absolutely nothing - just like the unlock button on the outside front door handles (if the QX70 has those).

With the key fob on you, the button will lock the doors if they are unlocked, and unlock the doors if they are locked. It even follows the setting if you have the door unlocks set to unlock only the driver's door on the first press, then all 4 (plus the liftgate) on a second press of the button.

I don't really see a whole lot of use for it, but I've found a couple of features like that. To each their own, I guess...
 
Thx. It does make sense. I just figured the buttons would be in a default lock only status if no Fob was detected (as a safety measure). Guess not.

I can see the button on the hatch being useful if you were putting stuff into the tailgate area and others wanted to enter the vehicle at the same time.
