New rotors or not

whats up guys. Need some opinions. When I purchased my 09 fx50 last may the dealer had replaced the rear rotors.

I think they went with the cheapest set they could get as they are all compleatly rust covered except for the breaking surface.

I just picked up an m56 that has slotted and cross drilled zinc coated rotors and now I can't stand the sight of the rusty ones on my FX.

Is it to wastefull and superficial to order a set of 4 rotors just to rid the car of the awful rusty ones. Let me know your thoughts....
 
As much of an eye soar partially rusted rotors are, i would use the current set until something starts not working with them. if you feel a lot of vibration during braking or less bite and stopping power then go ahead and replace them. As they say, don't fix whats not broken. If you're really itching to change them up just put your money in a piggy bank or something until it actually is time to replace them. That way at least you wouldnt go spending your money on other mods lol
There's a lot of reading material on this forum as to which rotors and pads people have tried, so be sure to check that out before finalizing your decision. And don't forget to hit the vendor section to get some quotes.
 
I need to replace my rotors. Bought the car used at 35k miles.. Now at 72k and I do feel slight vibration during braking. What brand rotor should I get? I want oem replacement and don't want it to rust. I don't have akebono bbk.
 
All rotors will eventually rust, especially when you leave in a cold climate. StopTech has Cryo treated rotors, not sure how good they are.

Most shops can re-surface those rotors to make them flat again, if there's enough material left (there usually is).

Have you checked the options at Tire Rack? They have a CRYO Treated rotor that "resists" corrosion... I say "resist" cause nothing stops the salt from Canadian winters (I have them on my fronts)... My mechanic put a cheaper option on my rears and they are doing REALLY well... They are also coated, but not "Cryo" treated... So there are tons of options... If you don't want it to rust, and don't want to overspend, DON'T get OEM rotors LOL!
 
I live in PA/NY area so we have salts here as well.

I haven't checked there. But I was looking into Centric brand. Are these good and anyone running these on here? I guess my main concern on the rust would be on the hub area. I see the pics of the Centric rotor's hub area is painted black. I assume this is a way to prevent rust on that part?
 
Cryo treating isn't for corrosion, it's for longevity. It may help prevent cracking but has no impact on corrosion. The same rotors are coated to help resist corrosion.

The painted or coated hat is to prevent corrosion. There isn't anything that can be done to the actual braking surface because it would wear away immediately. Some rotors come coated over the entire rotor and as soon as you use them, the coating on the braking surface is removed leaving the hat coated. Probably easier to manufacture that way.

OP, have you considered just painting your rotor hats? If they are otherwise fine and you don't want to spend the money there are plenty of paints you could use to cover the rust.

That's the rotor I have (just checked Tire Rack to confirm LOL). It's doing quite well. STOPTECH apparently usese the CENTRIC rotors as their base for their cross-drilled and whatever, so it's a good rotor. MUCH better than OEM...

Centric is the parent company of Stoptech so same thing pretty much. The only difference would be when you go to the high end StopTech BBKs. Pretty much all brake rotors from nearly every company start as a blank made in China or Taiwan. Some exceptions but even Brembos are made there now. I believe Centrics are machined in the US so that helps.
 
I wouldn't bother with the cryo-'s. It's not going to help with rest.
 
thanks all. I am going order a set up once I get done with the last few months of the lease on my m37. I think I will get the ones from Brake Motive on the bay, had good luck with them in the past and they are working well on my M56.
 
Just take that rotor off, sand the rusty part down and paint over. Problem solved. You will still see rust with the Centric between the painted hat and pad surface as it is not painted.
 
While buy replacement brake parts, I was looking at 2-piece rotors. Damn, they were 2x the cost of regular slotted... :(
 
I went with the DBA 4000 series and I'm super happy with them. Excellent rotors if not the best available for our cars. Not cheap though.
