New keys/remote

I bought the FX used and it only came with one key and remote. From searching, it seems www.keylessride.com is a good place to get a new remote. It looks like it would be about $70 for the remote. I have a few questions though:

1. If I input my VIN on the site it says it's incorrect. If I search by make and model, the only non-intelligent key choice is one with a button for the lift gate release (which my remote does not have). Will it still work?
2. Once I get the remote and program it, how do I go about getting the actual key made? Does it have a chip in it and can only be obtained at a dealership? Or can I go to a locksmith and simply get a copy cut?
3. I will be looking to get a remote starter installed in the near future, should I wait to have that done prior to getting the second set of keys made?
4. Is there a new type of key I can get instead? Like a new style (non-intelligent) from the newer infiniti's and retrofit it?

Thank you in advance!

Actually, save your money and try eBay for around $30. On the back of the standard remote is the FCC ID like KBRASTU15. Type that into eBay and it will come up with search results for your remote. That is the only type of remote/frequency you can use. For cutting, just go to a local hardware store that's willing to do it for you. Reprogramming the key fob is really easy too. You can find videos on You Tube on this. Good luck!

There is a chip embedded into the plastic handle of the key. The dealer will have to program the chip. I heard some locksmith program the chip as well.

Infiniti's need CONSULT II. You have to go to the dealer and ALL keys have to be programmed at the same time.

At least this is what the service tech at Infiniti told me. I somewhat believe her because my local alarm installer said he has a tool to reprogram, but he can't do mine and I need an extra key to do the remote start.

You can reprogram any key though. I bought a used I-key, and had it reprogramed at the dealer. Key was already cut, but what the heck do I need a key for, I have an I-key=) Emergencies, yes, but I have spare batteries.

lil noob here but whats an "I-key"?

"I-key" is an Intelligent Key. It's different that a standard keyless remote and provides keyless entry and keyless ignition. It's part of Infiniti's Tech Package.

Thanks for all the info.
As far retrofitting a newer style key/remote to work with the 1st gen FX's, has anyone done that successfully?

Thanks.

I don't think its possible just because of the different FCC frequencies of the chips, so you will have to use your current chip. I thought about getting a new key and somehow gutting the old one to make it fit into the new style, but I don't think the buttons would line up. I haven't tried it yet, but someday I will.

Thanks for all the info! I found an uncut key for about $19

and key fob for about $35

Those seem like decent prices. Now I need to get the key cut and start calling local dealerships to see who gives me a better price for programming the key.

I need to decide whether or not I want a (cheaper) remote start to be added onto the OEM keys or the (expensive) 2-way remote start (compustar, viper...). I don't know if carrying an extra remote is worth having the longer range and visual confirmation the 2-way remotes offer.

Hey i know this is an old thread and i don't like posting on old threads but I fried the motherboard on my Key Fob. Im looking at different choices for my 2005 key and i ran accross this one...

https://www.ikeyless.com/vehicles/Infiniti/FX/2005/1000554/

it says it'll work with my car i just need to romove the chip from my current key (little square on the side) and put it into the new key. Has anyone removed the chip from an old into a new one? and has anyone purchased a key like this "switchblade"??
