NEED HELP WITH speedometer.

Hey guys hows it going,
First off I want to thank those who have posted, be it DIY's, or any other information to help others etc....I havent posted anything personally but you guys have been great in sharing info and helping me in things that could have cost me lots to fix. But I need your help on this one here, My 2008 Infiniti FX35 AWD is going crazy on the speedometer, I don't know where to even start, now I am mechanic savy so I think if told what it could be I could maybe start figuring out whats going on. I called the dealership and was told that it wouldn't be the ICC recall (speedometer recall) because in my case, my speedometer says I am going 60 MPH when I could be going 5 MPH, Now it varies thats the reason I can't give too many specifics as far as what MPH I am going or what it says, sometimes it works and sometimes it don't. I've gone 80 and the speedometer stays between 58-65!?!?!?!?! It's crazy and really annoying. Anyhow
1. Is there a sensor that measures my speed??? If so where would it be? (I've been told some cars have it on the TRANSmission, others on the hub, etc...)
2. Could it be my Speedometer itself? (the mechanics of the dial etc...)
3. Is there any other location or sensor or part that you would recommend for me to look at???

I appreciate the responses and excuse me sounding uneducated or dumb. It's just I've never ran into this kind of problem in the life of me owning a car haha.

Speed sensor should be in wheel hubs. There is one in the transmission, but I think that one is for the TCM to determine shifts and all that, not sure. Does sound like a speed sensor issue, the dial wouldn't give random readings, it would probably just get stuck. I've had similar issue on a previous car a long time ago and it was the speed sensor. But in that instance, it was either on or off. Like 70mph or 0mph.

Your speed sensor, behind the left front wheel might be simply dirty and clogged. Try to first clean it up and see if that will fix the issue before you have to go with the replacement.
This might help:

does your dash have random lights flashing, like brake awd slip and etc?

No sir, I mean my TPS light is on but it is because I already know one (1) sensor is not any good, just haven't gotten around to replacing it. Have the part but time is of essence. I don't think that would be an issue though, to be honest the problem with the TPS sensor came with the truck when I purchased it in 2011.

Could be due to the recent ice/snow and the sand they put down on the bridges getting kicked up and dirtying the sensor.

This is true, I live out in NorthWestern Tarrant County (Azle Texas specifically) and I had no other choice but to have to drive to get basic groceries and/or necessities.

BTW

Your FX35 is awesome man.

Thanks :smile (2): That is farther out there, and probably got hit a little harder as well. I bet you enjoyed having AWD though.

I am having the exact same issue, Did you find out what was causing it? Thank you for sharing your experience!
