Hi,

Did anyone install an "aftermarket" navigation?
Is the Infiniti [stock] one worth the time and Money?

I'm considering getting something in-dash, but the dealership shocked me with over $2k.
Is there a cheaper option, that could be DIY ?:)

thanks a lot and welcome, btw:ever:

Of course there are alternatives but nothing is simple and if you want a stock oem look it may take a lot more than you bargain for. I suggest getting the oem nav and save yourself time and money.

Welcome to the Scene.

I think the oem aftermarket navi system usually is part of the tech package. Do you have the tech package already but its just missing the nav option? I don't know what the oem navi system price is but I would guess $1,500 would be a ball park figure. But also remember you can get a aftermarket standalone navi system like a garmin, tom tom or magellan for a LOT cheaper but without the factory look.

Hey Chris, I've been looking to do the same thing, however, the dealership I went to said they weren't able to do it. The issue you face with the OEM nav is that the buttons are not the same on your FX as a FX with the tech package, so i'm not sure how you would control the nav.

I've been looking into the garmin gvn 53, and the price seems reasonable. It allows you to get the nav through the factory screen. Haven't install it yet, but so far the feedback I've been reading seems to be good. Also, there is a guy in NY (long island) that has been installing them in FX's, so he knows what he is doing. I'm not sure if he is on this site, but his name is Johnmaxx and he is over at infintifx-org (that's.org, but i don't have permission to post links). maybe you can ask him for some feedback.

cokoblazed,

this is actually good to know; I'll probably go with Garmin.:ehh: I hope it is cheaper than the 2k from the dealership lol. Also the infiniti of Manhasset told me today that they cannot do this;(
so the options are limited..

thanks,
chris

I was surprised when you said they could do it. b/c i was looking around myself with no luck.

However, you need two devices for the gvn 53 to work in the FX. you will need the "Infiniti FX NAV Video Converter" (just type it into ebay), and you will also need the Garmin GVN 53 device (prices vary, but you can find one all over the internet). My recommendation is to try and get in touch with Johnmaxx and see if you can set up something with him for installation. My undersatnding is that there are 2 types of installation...one where you can use an external speaker (normally comes with the gvn device- and cheaper), or one where you can wire the sound to come through the car speakers (the radio will mute when directions are being given- more expensive).

All in all, with installation and depending on the deal you get on the devices, it should cost you under $1000 if you choose the external speaker. if you go the other way (sound through the car speakers), you'll be flirting with the $1000 range or a little more.
