Muffler delete

Its the system set up, the 50 up to the mufflers is more controlled for sound. I haven't looked at the manifolds but the difference may start there. You delete the mufflers on a 45 and it's gonna get loud.....

I believe most of us that have the FX50 and s models want a better exhaust note but are afraid of drone as well. I am coming from an 07 jeep srt8 and had to experiment quite a lot to get the truck just right. I have a completely stock 09 FX50S and its WAY too quiet. If the muffler delete is best I am all in but please advise if their is interior drone. If none or little I will try first and advise all. If their is some I wanted to try the magnaflow muff and tip 14840 that is 2.5" in and a 4" round tip. That sounded awesome on my old trailblazer ss. Let me know on the drone please.

I've been wanting to get a better and deeper exhaust growl and was hoping by doing something like an x pipe would work ?? I had one on my previous ride and it did make a huge difference so would this be a good route to go ...... other than buying a new exhaust system ?? TIA

I did the muffler delete yesterday and wanted to comment about the interior noise level... I don't notice a LARGE amount of drone, in comparison to my M45S with the full Megan cat back. NOTE: I am used to loud exhaust so it seems quiet to me, but there IS an increase in interior sound with the muffler delete. I'm going to be doing a full, true dual exhaust later in the week, hopefully, for the FX50S. There isn't enough sound to it for me. I will post pictures and video when I complete the exhaust.

UPDATE: I went back to the muffler shop today and cut the resonators off, started it and it was WAY too loud for me (and I like loud). SO, my plan to run a straight pipe off the factory Y-pipe out the back is out, and I don't know what route I want to go. Am I going to notice any better performance with true duals from the cats back with 2.5 pipe and a muffler with an X-pipe? Or am I just as well off to remove the resonators and put in a smaller muffler just to get the sound I want?

JHC828,

are you considering removing the cars with the muffler delete....that way you'll get slightly louder, much better performance, etc....and it might be exactly what you are looking for....that's something I might consider doing. I just don't know best way to overcome the check engine light....when I had a mustang you could just buy mil eliminators.

No, I don't want to remove the Cats... I bought a new GMC Sierra Denali in Jan and put long tubes on it and eliminated the cats and don't like the sound much or the CEL, kinda made it raspy. I'm planning on taking that truck for a tune at a local place that works on domestic, specifically LS engines after I install a cam. While I'm there I'm gonna ask the guy about working with imports and bring up the FX to see if he's ever messed with one before. I might see what he can do and if he can tune it, take off the 2 rear cats (I think they are cats?) leaving the 2 before the 02 sensor, and then run true duals if I can get an answer as to whether it will be worth the effort in 2.5 tubing. I'm sure this engine has more to offer, just gotta figure out how to squeeze it out. ;)

if you don't want to drop the cats, what about replacing the cats with a HFC?

Here was my Cobra a few years ago and what it sounded like w/o cats:

It's funny you mention about 2.5 piping and straight pipes.....there was a guy here about a year back that had a FX50 handy with cars (Has a GTR and Jeep srt8 and has a custom garage with a life)....anyway. He said he inspected the FX50 and said that he was shocked to see how much restriction the exhaust was and was convinced that if they were straight pipes with 2.5'' or possibly even 2.75'' or maybe even 3 that you'd get a ton more power. I'm going to search for these posts for you so you can read everything he had posted....

Read this thread.....all of it at least starting at this post going forward and you'll get a lot from it:

Thanks for the links. I read both of them and I really wish the one wasn't closed. Does anyone know if that guy ever did a custom catback? Gutting the secondary cats is certainly an option, although I've never done it before, I'm guessing you just take a screwdriver and hammer and go to town? My concern with 3" was fitment, 2.5 would surely free up some of the restrictions the factory system has in it and would be easier to work with. I have a friend that has a shop close to home and I will go back and play around with it some more when we have time to get together. I will also take lots of pictures to post for others who might be interested in doing something similar.

That Jon guy has been inactive. I've tried to reach him but never heard anything. Good luck. Keep us posted. You'll really help the community in doing so.

If u have a specific question regarding exhaust, might be worthwhile to ask it as a different thread with that specific question more open than just fx50. You'll probably be more likely to get a response from more members that way since some might not read a muffler delete thread.

As requested, a video of the muffler delete both outside the vehicle and a short drive inside.

This is the exhaust sound I'm trying to replicate... This is a clip of my M45S with the full Megan catback with resonator delete. Cats- straight pipe- mufflers.

I have to say, the exhaust sounds louder on the video than it does inside the car, to me. I guess I'm not really going for more sound, just a different sound with the FX. I'm going to replace the stock catback with 2.5 piping, true duals with x pipe and muffler. I will decide then, depending on the sound, whether to gut the secondary cats.
