Louder engine noise - anyone else with this problem?

Living in Canada, we've been hit with a lot of snow for the past month and my '04 FX45 has been in snow mode for most of it. Recently, however, the weather has warmed and the snow mode has been off but I find that the engine/exhaust is ridiculously louder. I sound like a monster truck. Even when starting, my wife gets startled. Anyone else have this experience or have an idea what it is? THanks in advance.

Maybe a hole in the exhaust? Since you've been in snow recently, the car was probably exposed to salt on the underside which leads to rust on the exhaust. Worth checking out :-)

And since the car is 7 years old, it definitely has some sort of rust or corrosion on the exhaust. Especially is you never wash the underbody. I'd look at that first.

How do you guys wash the underbody if you don't take it to a auto wash?

I take my car to the self wash/spray, but with that high pressure I can't get under the car really...I don't want to get to close to the paint body otherwise I could potentially hurt it that close up.....I've done it before where the ripped off the paint on a car coming way way to close on accident trying to get a certain spot.

I just jack it up on stands in my driveway and use car wash soap and a bucket of water to wash it down by hand. I only do it once though when the winter is nearing to an end.

wow...that's dedication..any other method suggested? I attempted to wash the undercarriage with the high pressure, angled it under, then smoke came out so I quickly remove it cause the engine was hot....just doesn't seem like a great idea realy...maybe better just have driving in rain clean it up after winter then.

Thanks for the replies. 3 months ago, I was able to look at the undercarriage and the exhausts were ok at that time. I'll have to look at it again.

My car is kept in the underground heated garage of my condo building, and it's still loud when starting up in warmer temperatures, so I don't think it's due to the cold.

I have to say that the engine has been running really smoothly for 7 years. Still find the engine/exhaust notes sexy. Only complaints of the car have been the door lock actuators, stupid troublesome fuel gauges, and difficult to get in & out rear seats. I don't even mind the thirsty gas consumption that much. :smile (2):
