I'm new to this forum so firstly Hello everyone:smile (2):
To make a long story short and it started really long ago about half a year ago from a humming sound from the engine bay. After further inspection i found out that the power steering pulley was causing it at that time i didn't realize that my pump was about to fail but soon it did (after 3months or so it just started sticking and developed a leak so had to be replaced)
Found a used unit at a junkyard from a relatively low mileage car and put it in.
Now it seems to me that the power steering is pretty stiff. The PS is working but the steering doesn't seem to be as light as it used to be.
Checked the system throughout for leaks and there aren't any, a very slight hissing sound persists when i turn the steering wheel to full lock but according to the service manual this is normal and does not affect the operation of the system in any way. The system was bled properly at least how the manual tells to do it several times no bubbles or other residue in the reservoir, steering fluid new of course. Checked all possible combinations of how the PS works RPM doesn't affect it and at speed it is the same stiffness as on standstill so assume that the solenoid in the rack also is OK, rack itself didn't have any issues prior to PS pump replacement. Replaced belts along with it cleaned the throttle body and replaced pcv valve along with replacing the PS pump as i thought it was timely at 80k miles. The car runs silky smooth apart from the hard steering. No bad sound, nothing it is just stiff, takes both hands to turn the steering wheel. It is not rock solid but not comparable to my friends Toyota Land cruiser whit the same tyres where the steering is quite light.
When in neutral gear and I start to turn the steering wheel on standstil while engine running the rpms drop by a 50-100 for a second. Is this normal?
How stiff is the steering really on our cars? Could bleeding affect it in that way? Maybe there's a bleeding screw somewhere i don't know about?(on the ps pump itself?) didn't find anything in the manual? I run 265/60R18 winter tires could that contribute also? Or did i Just forget how it felt like?
Should i just leave it alone for heavens sake?:rotfl:
Sorry for the long post, wanted to be precise and thanks for any advise!
