Lift gate will not open

Today I took the interior panel of the lift gate off to see what I can do to fix the broken license plate screw anchor. I didn't touch anything. I put the panel back on and opened/closed the lift gate twice to see if everything is back to normal. I tried to open it 2 hours later and it is now stuck. When I press the rubber switch above the license plate, I can hear the motor but I cannot move it more than an inch. It seems like the locking mechanism isn't fully unlocking it. Please help!
 
What happens when you hold down the lift gate switch on the lower dash console or your key fob?
 
Have you try the manual release lever? There is an release lever once you pry open the access door inside the trunk rear panel. Maybe once you use the release level, it would mechanical reset itself.
 
Ok, so mine does not have the power liftgate, but it does have that "electric shut assistance" feature which would keep operating while I am trying to get it open. I disconnected the battery to shut off that mechanism, and tried opening it with the inside release lever. Still no luck. It moves about an inch but I think the locking mechanism isn't fully unlocking. Another problem is you cannot get the panel off unless the liftgate is open. I feel like I am screwed. I am taking it to the dealer, but I think this will be very expensive.
