How often do you change Mobil 1 Extended Performance 5W-30 oil?

Hey guys,

There was an awesome sale on Mobil 1 Extended Performance synthetic 5W-30 oil at my local shop and I finally picked up two bottles.

I`m arguing with my brother about how often should you be changing the oil.
The bottle says very 15,000 miles, but I don`t believe it.

What do you think?

Containaments will always find a way into your engine.

Filter is also a limiting factor.

I wouldn't go longer than 7,500 miles but I stick with much shorter intervals.

There are a LOT of myths out there regarding longer oil change intervals and long life oil. The truth of the matter comes down to how the manufacturer of the engine (in this case NISSAN) designed the motor components along with what types of metals were used.

For example: My father owns a BMW M6, he gets away with FACTORY RECOMMENDED intervals of 10K miles approx. BUT the reason this car can get away with it isn't because of some magic oil, it's because the engine , metals and grades of metals used and the overall design of the components were made to go this long with this specific type and grade of oil. BMW builds a motor and then goes to the oil companies to have an oil designed around the motor.

90% of manufacturers cannot justify the higher cost this requires (hence why a BMW M6 costs upward of $100k lol) so they build a motor using metals and grades of metal that already work with off the shelf oils hence the shorter intervals. You can extend the interval by MAYBE 1-3 thousand miles IF you use longer life oils, but I wouldn't push it more than that.

Of course every motor is different and every driver is different on how they run the car so there are too many variables to sum it up in one neat explanation but that's what I've researched directly from the oil companies we deal with such as Motul / Eneos

There is a lot of anecdotal eveidence on oil changes out there. People talk about experience and feel but realistically you have no idea what the oil is doing to your engine unless you have the used oil tested at a lab. Check Blackstone Laboratories. For $30 they run a sample of your used engine oil and tell you exactly how much longer you can run it based on the breakdown of chemicals and wear metals present in the oil. Check out BITOG.com. It's an oil forum - with more information than you care to absorb. People regularly have oil samples tested and take the advice of the lab - stretching oil change intervals out past 10,000 miles. There you might be able to find well documented oil analyses on our motor, giving you at least a starting point with data behind it rather than an opinion.

The short story is absolutely yes, you can stretch synthetic intervals much longer than most people are comfortable with. But first you have to know you have the RIGHT synthetic for your car/motor, driving environment, driving style, etc. It's not as simple as trying different oils. You have to try, test, adjust, try again... before the test results start to show you are able to extend the interval.

Same is for the Infiniti FX35/50 (at least 2009+). You can go much longer if you use their Nissan ester oil designed for our cars.....or simply use something else and change every 3,000 miles. Sames if for the trans and the special nissan coolant.

I use Mobil 1 synthetic in my 09 FX35 and also Mobil 1 in my GMC Z71 Crew Cab. I always use the OEM Filters in both vehicles. If I had an Amsoil Dealer close to me, that is what I would be using.

I change the oil and filter in both vehicles every 6,000 kms or roughly every 3,500 miles.

why the heck would u only buy two bottles?

Blackstone did my vq35de and told me to try pushing 6000miles on normal Castrol gtx, I sent them my sample at 4200 miles.

I'm guessing they were gallon bottles - that's how I buy my Shell Rotella T6.

Glad to see somebody else using sample analysis. It's the only way to go IMO!

I use the same oil and I change it every 3500-4000 miles. I was thinking of switching back to eneos (used it on my 08 Tacoma) or amsoil just because I noticed the oil being way darker/thicker every oil change with mobile1 extended

I change mine my oil every 3k. In my opinion it's not worth the extra miles to save some dollars... why risk paying a lot more if something happens? it's not that much to change oil, but of course just my opinion....

Also if you do very short commutes you should increase your intervals...like wifey's LOL
The engine does not have enough time to reach its optimal temperature so I change synthetic oil/filter 2 or 3 times a year

I change mine every 5,000 miles using Mobil1 5w-30 and the OEM filter. I also just installed a Fumoto Oil Drain Valve to make my next oil change much quicker by skipping the removal of the oil drain plug.
I also got about a foot of the 3/8" clear plastic hose at Lowe's to use as a line to drain directly from the valve to the oil pan. Cost me $.39

I use mobil1 or castrol edge 5w30 on all my cars. I change it every3000 miles no matter what. I might go 3100 but thats about it i do alot of short commutes & extended idling wich brakes the oil down so you have to take that into consideration aswell besides the mileage.

I do 6,000km (3,720miles) oil change with Mobil 1/BMW Synthetic on both my FX and Mini Cooper S, both cars DD and short distances plus lots of stop and go.
