How does Distance Control Assist (DCA) work?

I have a 2009 FX with the Nav and tech package, anyone know this DCA thing works?

The salesman says that if its on, the car will stop for me to avoid a heads on colision.

Does this acually help bring the car to a stop if the driver is not paying attention or say, falls asleep at the wheel? Like, what if the driver is still stepping on the accelerator, will it over-ride that and bring the car to a stop? Or if I'm crawling very slowly in traffic.

Does this option work if the cruise control is not on? Or even if the cruise control option is turned on, but there is not set speed?

You set the DCA when you engage intelligent cruise control. You can set the distance you follow someone when it is engaged. It will slow you down to maintain that distance and will stop you if the fellow ahead of you stops. It will then resume your set speed when that person accelerates or leaves.

There's also a cool laser beam on the car ahead of you, that's how it measures the distance. :laugh: I kid, kid
 
Distance Control Assist (DCA) and has nothing to do with intelligent cruise control. Distance Control Assist (DCA) is it's own system and can operate without intelligent cruise control being on. DCA works buy keeping a safe distance ahead of any cars in front of you in stop and go traffic by pushing down the brake pedal and moving the gas pedal with an actuator. You'll actually see the gas pedal and break pedal move and be controlled by itself giving an illusion that a ghost is operating the car lol.

Intelligent cruise control is a whole other system. It used when you have cruise control on and a car pops in front of you with it on and the car slows the speed down in cruise mode to keep the FX away from the car in front of you. Then when the car in front of you is no longer there it maintains the preset speed.
 
For DCA you have to be approaching a vehicle in front of you at a relatively high speed for it to work. If you are just crawling up to a car that is stopped in traffic or at a stop light it wont activate. It will only apply your brakes at 25% or so of full braking force, not like jamming on your brakes for an emergency stop. The manual indicates it wont fully stop you from rear ending someone but at least slow you down so you only have a few thousand dollars of dammage. On my FX50S you have to turn it on everytime you start the car, it defaults to off when you shut the car off. I used mine a few times but it gets annoying as when I am pulling up to a stopped car in front of me kinda fast it kicks in when I dont really dont need it so I dont use it anymore.
 
you can have it on all the time if you want....I think you have to hold it down....instructions somewhere... :)
