Will an 05 OE FX45 bolt on trailer hitch bolt on to my 04 FX35 AWD?

Yes. But if you are buying used make sure you get ALL the parts. There is the hitch itself plus a small bracket adapter and 2 parts to the wiring harness that consist of the harness itself and the relay that is located under the spare tire compartment.

Is there a preferred trailer hitch to use?

Most get a Kurt hitch because of the lower price than the preferred OEM for best tucked away looks. Kurt, Uhaul, Reese, and Draw Tight all hang a little lower and show more than OEM. Receiver size is a consideration. If using for a bike rack, the wire harness is not needed for trailer lights.
