Help! My 2004 Intelligent key fob is ugly - can I make the newer style work?

Hi everyone,

First let me say that I have searched this forum extensively so as not to post a question that has already been answered and I couldn't find an answer. So, I've missed something please just point me in the right direction and forgive me.

I just bought a 2004 FX 35 with the Technology Package with the Intelligent Key / Smart Key / I-Key fob. IMHO it's quite ugly (a simple black rectangle) and I'd like to modify one of the newer sleeker smart key fobs (curved shape with silver buttons) so that it will work with my FX. Can this be done? Can I either re-program one of the newer fobs to work with my car OR take the innards out of my fob and put them into the newer sleek fob and make it work that way?

I'm not opposed to spending some coin to make this happen, I just don't know if it can be done. I'm sure that someone out there has tried to do this! Any help?

First of welcome and congrats on your new ride!!

Second ... I could juts use a short reply and say No :)
But here is why ... I've spent weeks when I got my FX looking for the same solution, unfortunately those keys use different receiver and the small motherboard is in no way possible to be trimmed and fitted onto the newer key enclosure. Attached are the pics of the brick key and the oval one.
So you just have to learn to love your square key. Besides you have the iKey so you will keep it in your pocket anyways :) Sorry to spoil it for you, but many tried and it is what it is.

Yeah I tried to do that too. Not possible... At least easily....
 
I could be wrong, but I remember seeing a swap floating around the G35 boards somewhere. But it may not be for the I-key though. Worth searching for.

GetLuckiFX - thanks for your answer... and for the pics. I was afraid of that. Oh well, I will live. I guess I should be glad I got the intelligent key option so I can leave that ugly thing in my briefcase or pocket and never have to pull it out in the first place! Haha!

Seriously though the new ones are so much better looking.

AeroBFA - I found the thread you are referring to before posting and became very hopeful. Then I realized it wasn't for the iKey. Damn! So hi to so lo so fast!

You're correct Andrew, this one however was for the non I-Key, just the basic G key.
 
it can be done I think but it won't be cheap, you'd need to at least replace the key and the body computer to a later fx body computer then get it all programmed. I haven't done it yet to be 100% sure but it really should be very doable I think.

I had the same idea actually, but when I asked the guys at the service department of my local infiniti dealership they said, "nope, can't be done. they are different size modules and they won't fit". Have you heard of anyone that is planning on doing this? or who has done it?
 
I know this thread is old but what the heck... Recently there has been a surge of silicone covers for smart keys... We just bought two for our new Durango. They are awesome! Anyway, has anyone seen any silicone covers for these FX smart keys? I can't find them. Or maybe merely a new plastic case to put the guts from this one into. Mine has 12 years of wear on it and is starting to fall apart.
