Hey guys... I have a rattling noise on my 05 FX35 at about 2500-3000 rpm. I know its coming from heatshield on the y-pipe.. The material(dont know what its called.. maybe insulator??) pretty much is gone.. i guess from the heat, and heatshield hitting y-pipeato 2.5-3 k rpm.. I have a question..
Where can I get this material ? ( Tell me what its called too :) ..) Please point me in a right direction where to get this stuff or any other options to fix it.. I dont think I wanna take the heatshield off ( I will if cant find a solution ).. is taking heatshield off and wrapping y-pipe with heat wrap will do the same thing??

Please, HELP.. Hate to look at people looking at me driving FX with that noise..

Don't think you really need the heatshield (unless you pass by tall grass underneath the vehicle and you don't want it to catch on fire). That thin piece of metal starts rusting after a while and things start to rattle. When you buy an aftermarket cat back exhaust, they don't come with heatshields, so a lot of us are running without any heat shielding around the pipes.

recently im having this noise problem as well... was wondering about the products that jumbo and fxlr8 suggested and how they are used... any pics or DIY out there?

No DIY here that I know about.

Header wrap is a common thing you can find in most mega auto stores. Instructions come with the kit and really all you need to do is remove the part, wrap it and put it back. You could attempt to do it on the car (without removing), but I would think there are things that would get in the way and would make it a pain. Luckily, the Y pip is an accessible item especially if you have access to a lift.

The other solution would be to remove the part that's rattling. Won't bother the exhaust at all.

I removed the stock heat shields from my OEM exhaust manifold and wrapped them. Here's a photo - but these are no longer on my car.

well yesterday i decided to investigate what exactly that noise was, thinking it was the heat shield, turns out it wasnt... it was a damn clamp that got all rotted out... it was so bad i simply just pulled it out... noise gone! wondering if i need to replace that clamp though... any feedback?

High heat paint doesn't insulate the heat. Don't see a reason to paint the heat shield with them.

no not paint the heat shields with them i want to paint the exhaust with it after i remove the heat shield because there rattling and making noise. or i was thinking of getting those hose clamp and putting it around the exhaust and heat shield and tightening it up.

Paint won't be anywhere near as effective as the actual heat shield. But even the heat shields aren't "necessary'. if you want to feel better about removing the heat shields, you can use header wrap as someone said. That stuff actually works.
