Headliner rattling with sub, removal and deadening help?

Hey guys!

So with my sub on, my headliner rattles to high hell. I've narrowed down to only one part of it though, the part right above my head directly in front of the sunroof where the reading light assembly is, but behind the sunglasses holder. When I hold my hand against that part it doesn't rattle so I know that this is area is my problem.

Before I remove my entire headliner to get to it with dynamat, any suggestions on how I can deaden this area? Is there some kind of deadening foam I can spray in there and would you guys recommend that? I'm hesitant about that because I would be spraying wires and whatnot that are in that area.

I am also hesitant about taking down the headliner because it seems like a whole lot of work and I don't want to mess anything up.

Would car audio shops be able to do this kind of work usually and how much would you estimate the cost to be? I just need this one little part deadened, not the whole ceiling.

Thanks for your input!!!

Mine rattles alot too...Ive actually taken my headliner out for another reason and decided to adress this while it was down. Mine appears to be a piece of plastic that is making the noise and it looks like a couple pieces of foam int the corners will fix this up(no need to drop the headliner or dynamat)

I will post some pics up here when i get this done.

^^^ +1
Had the same issue, I popped out the map light asssembly as a whole and put some padding behind it. After that huge improvement! I truely believe it's where the rattle was comming from.

Just noticed this was for a 2nd gen...But the fix might be the same

Hey thakns so much for your guys' help! I will see if I can pull the headliner from the sunroof side down a little bit and see if I can squeeze some kind of foam in there. Do they sell foam that I can cut at home depot ?

You could use (insulation tape commonly used for sealing doors frames) or if you want a sheet of something that you can fold look at a store that sells shipping material like Staples or officemax. Cheap fix. Hope it helps. I would also try behind the whole Map light assembly if the rattle persists. It worked for me and you don't have to remove the headliner to try. Use a plastic pry tool and some care, Good luck!

These are the pieces I am going to try

They can be bought at any Nissan dealer

I would imagine you could get get foam tape at any autoparts store/home depot

Okay so i can just pry the plastic map assembly off where the plastic meets the headliner material?

I was thinking about that but i didnt want to risk damaging anything if that's not the way it's supposed to come off. Thanks i will try!

Dont pry the roof console down (where the map lights and sunroof switch are) you need to drop the headliner to take that off. at least on the 1st gens you do I am assuming the 2nd gens are the same(this is how I damaged my headliner.

Ill snap a pic of the piece i am talking about, you should be able to get at it pretty easy with the sun roof open.

Your ride must be different cause I had no problems with mine

The second gen looks diffferent I would not pry on that trim.

Here is where mine was ratteling.
The plastic piece you see attached to the sun roof was ratteling against the wind deflector that pops up when you open the sun roof.

I temporarily put some foam in there to see if I could get it to stop and it worked perfectly. Now I need to re do the foam to make it look like I didnt just stuff foam in there which i did for testing.

Alright guy's I finally deadened it! The headliner near the sunroof is held in place by three pieces of velcro, so you can pull it down a little.

I think I found perfect, cheap deadening material too! My headliner is now solid (the rearview mirror is a different story lol still gotta figure that one out)

It's PVC rubber pipe insulator that i got from home depot, but here's a link from lowe's:

http://www.lowes.com/webapp/wcs/sto...al Rubber Pipe Insulation&CAWELAID=1023561009

The rubber squeezes into the headliner space very nicely and absorbs absolutely everything my sound system can throw at it. I only had to use about a 4 or 5 inch piece too. The rubber does have adhesive on the sides, but tears off like butter, couldn't be easier. Very easy to cut to whatever size you need.

Only 6 bucks for like 10 feet of it, i don't even know what to do with the other 9.6 feet lol.

Hope this helps someone!
