Headlight Issues

So Im driving and my headlights just go out, it happens all the time now. First one will go out and then both will go out. Sometimes this happens when I hit a bump, or make a sharp turn, or just happens, so I was thinking might be a loose connection, so I let a master mechanic friend of mine take a look and he could not find anything. Really don't want to go to the dealer, any ideas or has anyone been through anything like this. I have the 1st gen 2003 FX45. Thanks

Check the connection to the ballasts and go from there. If one goes, then the other goes too, it's not just a loose bulb or one bad ballast. At some point in the harness, the separate wires for each headlight merge. I want to say that the headlight harness is on the driver's side (car isn't in front of me right now).

So when that happens, do you need to switch the engine off and then back on to restore lighting? Or lights just come back on on their own after sometime or when you hit another bump?

Do you hear the headlight relay switching off (from underneath the engine hood) when the lights go off on their own? Or it stays on regardless? The sound of the relay switching on and off when you turn the headlights on and off is very clear when the engine is off, it will be difficult to hear when the engine is running unless if you pay close attention.
