Hard shift when cold

Hi guys,

11 FX50S 48000km, Transmission shift harsh when cold. I park in a garage and let me FX idle for about 5 min before driving, I drive away under normal acceleration and the transmission seems to get to a higher gear quickly and its rough like hard. If i accel just a little the rpm kick up then instantly drop, example..If im at 2500rpm i accel a little and the rpm pick up to 2800ish then right back down to 2500. On top of the flakey rpm its still hard shifts, until i drive a few blocks and engine is warm and all is gone.

Anyone else experience this? I know some people where talking about the normal vs not so normal of the trans to blast threw the gears to reach low rpm to maybe save fuel. I can take it to the dealer as i still have warranty but i thought id ask first.

I can probably take a video in the AM.

Make sure you're not on sport mode and also look into the transmission re flash for hard downshifts. There's a few threads on here on the matter :)

Have you had the tranny reflashed? Is this in DS or D? I know my trans had the reflash and is still a little jerky around town because Its always looking for different gear. I usually shift myself anyway because it's so annoying.

Has this just started happening? It could either be the reflash people are talking about (there's a TSB on it somewhere), or there could be issues. May be low fluid, fluid expands so it may be low when cold and once it warms up, it hits normal level. Seems like your symptoms are with the torque converter; it's stall speed should be around 2800. So it is normal for rpm's to flash up to where it locks up, then go more slowly.

Its not everyday it happens, just randomly sometimes. I'm leaning towards reflash. I usually dont drive in DS, but if it shifted hard when in that mode I would understand.

Thanks for the input guys.

I have the same issue going on. It feels as though it hesitates 2 to 3. I have to drive about 15 miles and it some what goes away. It does it going from 5 to 6. some times.

I just got it, I have all the service records from the day it was new one owner, 180K on it. I ust check with the dealership and it has never had the trans flashed. wondering if this will fix any thing of the issues.

thanks,

I have a '10 FX50S owned since new, with 56,000 km's, and have the same issue. The trans software was updated right after I bought the vehicle and it made it worse. It's particularly bad when cold, and if the vehicle has sat for a while (I travel a lot and also drive another vehicle). Stuttering at low speeds, hesitates, surges usually when I feather the throttle....but at higher speeds it sorts itself out. It's worse in D, better in DS and not really noticeable in paddle.
I recently bought a Dodge Ram 1500 with the Eco-Diesel and now I really notice it as the drivability of the Dodge is so much better (I know, apples and oranges but just talking drivability).
Been to two dealers countless times and am told thats the way the 7 speed tranny is, and there are no current updates or anything planned.
My only hope is the adaptive software is messing things up now I share the FX with my wife and it is constantly learning driver habits, which is making it worse.

Glad to know I'm not the only one with this issue. Since i noticed the issue i have used my scan tool(snap-on solus edge) and cleared all the learn parameters of the ecu, I do still have this issue some days but not nearly as bad. So if anyone wants to volunteer to disconnecting there battery to reset everything then drive and see if that changed anything. I agree with you "abone" that if feels the adaptive shift may be at fault, On my 05 Touareg v8 if i reset the adaptive throttle parameters it drives completely different and when i hasn't been reset for a long time it can be almost annoying to drive, (holds gears to long, not very sensitive gas peddle).
If anyone wants to try the disconnect let us know if anything changes or if its all in my head.

That would suck, I'm so glad my 2010 FX50S does not do this. I have about 75,000 kms on it.

It isn't in your head prelude48 - before the FX I owned a G35 Sport and before that a Q45 and both had excellent transmissions. The service mgr here in Richmond - interestingly a BMW owner - tells me that Infiniti have a problem with the 7 speed. They wouldn't admit it at first however. He also said that Infiniti have no interest in further development or refinement of this transmission, which tells me it will be replaced with something else in future models. The 5.0 liter is a thing of the past now so no surprise.
Unlike other posts in this forum, and over at the FX forum, mine doesn't rapidly accelerate, but more stutter, hesitate and slightly surge.
I don't mind trying the battery trick but I just replaced the Nissan battery, which are shit btw, and nothing changed so not sure if that will help.
