I'm going to buy the Nissanipod kit, but have a shop install it. I assume they would be able to come up with the adapters and a power source, do you agree?
By the way thanks for all the research and info, Ron![]()
I'd be surprised if they can. I say just get the front kit and get it installed and use a Kensington adapter.. That's the easiest & cheapest way to do. If you want to get rid of cable mess all together, just get one of those adapters. To sum up everything (since I think I couldn't explain it well):
- Get the nissanipod.com FRONT kit: This is the easiest to install and you can change the volume using steering wheel and change between playlists, albums, settings etc using the stereo controls.
- The kit (as with all other ipod kits) supports charging on all ipods up to 4th gen and the first gen ipod
- The charging difference is due to Apple's change, not related to iPod kits
- The standard car iPod charging is 12V. New gen ipods/iphones require 5V.
- The voltage needs to be reduced to 5V. Adapters reduce this directly without any other need. Kensington powers the ipod through the cigarette lighter (ie, one more cable).
IF in fact you depend on an audio shop to do the voltage conversion, most likely they'll mess up the kit. If not, they'll reduce the voltage BUT your iPhone will still say "Charging not supported" because there are additional changes need to be done on the circuit board . Simply, you'll probably pay for a "custom" job to the audio shop and still get something not fully functional.
Again, I say get the front kit and get it installed if you don't think you can do it. Then just get a Kensington or an adapter and you're good.
