Failing inspection for window tint? (NY)

Hey all,

getting mixed responses so was wondering if someone could clear this up. My annual inspection expires in Jan, and i wanted to tint my windows 35%. I was going to renew inspection but then id have to fix a crapload of other things (bulbs) too. At the same time, tempted to put on some 35% tints.

my question is - can they fail your vehicle inspection for having tints in NY? i looked on the dmv site, and it just stated to make sure windows were safe/not cracked and nothing about tints

I'm pretty sure tints in NY are illegal, aren't they. I would assume you would not pass inspection. Why not just wait until after you get your car inspected.

What bulbs are you going to have to fix?
 
Tints mean nothing during an inspection. All the vehicles i have owned had dark tints from 5% to 15%. I currently have 5% on the fx and had my inspection done in october with no problems at all.

Yeah lol, I live in NY and got 6 tint tickets since I've had my tints installed back in July. 35% on the fronts and 20% rear.


I had another car a few years ago that had a tiny crack in the windshield the size of a little pebble, and they failed me for inspection on that car. I had to get the windshield replaced on that.


They shouldn't give you a ticket for that though lol.

John should be right. I've never been bothered during inspection for tints (20%). But I wouldn't say it's a sure bet since I don't know the exact rules. Pat: I go to a Korean shop in Elmhurst that always gets me in and out in 10 minutes if you need a place.

Didn't they just change the regulations so they don't look at tint anymore during inspection in NJ? You'll still get bothered by cops though.
 
Well in ny or any were your not allowed to tint the front windows. It's supposed to allow 70% of light to go threw your windows so u can see Threw ur side view mirrors. But pman if u need a spot here in bklyn I got one that will pass you no matter what tints cel etc...
 
this is where it helps to know people who do inspection and stuff. like a local auto shop. if you are not sure then why risk it? don't wanna jinx it but just when you think you'll make it out ok, bad luck takes its toll on you.
 
hmm i was thinking about 35%, after reading some other nyc car forums, seems like that is the magic number where hopefully cops wont be a bother. Of course they still can, but i'm not about to pull a go big or go home on tints :-P

thanks for all the responses ya'll. Just a laundry list of things to do before the end of the year for the fx.

Rich and Mike - will keep you guys in mind for the spots. I heard midas does a $10 inspection. Just out of curiousity how much do your places charge or is it a universal price
 
I heard somewhere to just roll down your windows. Everytime I picked mine up from an inspection they were already down anyway.
