Now I am not the first time who has done this, but I can tell you I’ll probably did it the easiest way of all.
As you might know we need a rear fog light here in Europe. And at first I did it the easy way by just putting a red light under my rear bumper for my yearly inspection and take it of again when done. Cause it was a ugly sight to look at.
I see many FX’ers in the Netherlands who just keep it there true out the whole year but I just don’t like the look of it and you can see that it doesn’t belong there IMO……
My thought was to make some leds into the rear reflectors so I can make the “Fog” light in that location. Our law here doesn’t say anything about the brightness of the fog light…just that you need one.
When trying to take the rear reflectors out of the bumper I soon found out that you needed to take the whole bumper off just to get them out.
So put a hold on that “Project” as I didn’t want to do that at that point……call me lazy….but I had the rear bumper spoiler also in mind and didn’t want to take it all apart again.
Now the last day of my holiday in Spain ,when now even having a rear view camera as well ,I decided to ram a pole in reverse……
The perfect time to do the fog light conversion as well I thought.
What I did was cut the side of the reflector open with a dremel with care so you can still use both parts.
Bought a universal DTRL led strip (witch are very popular nowadays) from the firm PILOT wich fits perfect in length and can be mounted easily by the 3M tape wich is on the back.
Only have to make a extra hole for the wiring and make that hole a bit bigger so the connector of that wire can sink in a bit as the reflector doesn’t fit that well anymore.
Paint the base of the reflector black so you cannot see the strip that easy and kitted the front back to the rear piece again. Then put silicone around to make sure there doesn’t come any water true even though the ledstrip is waterproof. But just to make sure you don’t get condense.
IMO this is better then separate leds wich others did is this runs very smooth and horizontal. Drilling holes for leds wich are all perfect even is far more difficult and with even 1 off you can see the difference.
Here are some pics….enjoy:
