My 'Service Engine Soon' light came on on my way back from Austin 3 days ago, I reset the ECU and it went away until this morning when it came on again. I went to Autozone and they diagnosed this code for me, it goes as.....

Troubleshooting P0442
OEM Brand: Infiniti

Definition: Evap Contron System small leak detected
Probable Cause
1. EVAP Purge Solenoid faulty
2. Canister vent solenoid faulty
3. Blocked vapor canister
4. Faulty EVAP pressure sensor
5. Loose or defective fuel cap

I could only understand #5 and i have checked it 3 times and it's tightened properly. Could anyone enlighten me what the rest of the probable causes mean and give me any solutions if you have one? Dealership is 19 miles away and won't be open till monday.
this seems like a minor error to me but can I get some assurance?

man i been deal with the same problem trying not to go to the dealer but the first thing is to look at the gas cap!! but it is probaby one of the other things i change the purge valve but that was not the remedy, I was going to look around for a minute but I think I am headed to the dealer myself let me know what you find.

I would change the cap. You can't test it visually for leaks, you need a tester and it only costs 10 to 15 dollars for a new one. Yours is probably original anyway. Its cheap and worth a try. GOOD LUCK

This is where I am: "Service Engine Soon" and P0442.
Per the OP's list of 5, I'll be checking the gas cap first. When the fault part is replaced, will the dash light go out right away, or will a certain number of miles be needed to driven before the light goes out?

I think you'll need to reset the ECU, since it's usually a stored code type of thing. That way if a problem comes up and goes away you can see what it was at a later point. Sometimes it can take a little bit of time/miles for the code to return, so watch it for a bit after you reset the ECU to be sure.

Darn. I was hoping that the proper gas cap seal would clear it (assuming that's it) and I'd be on my merry way.
I know, I know. I am thankful it is only a minor thing.

To clear the trouble code, you need one of those cheap OBD II dongle and Torque app will do it if Autozone is not in the area.

Do you have any issues with Torque thing? I have heard mixed reviews about them, with some people saying they didn't even work.

I'm very happy with Torque but I don't use it much at all. I've played around with it a few times and this is the first time I've really needed it or used it for a real purpose. (I think this is the first time the check engine light has come on) I got in there and easily read the code and description. Then I went back in and cleared the code. Dash light went off immediately.

I had a buddy who said he couldn't get his to work. Not sure if he had a faulty part or user error. Although he did say it was in his van, and not his Z so maybe it just didn't work with that car for some reason as well.

A couple years ago I got the standard common dongle (blue and orange label). It was really slow to connect to bluetooth, but once it connected it was fine. I just tinkered with it a bit looking through all the menus. Then a friend's car was throwing a code. I told him about Torque and gave him the dongle. So then I bought a new one and choose the mini dongle so it wouldn't stick down so far, especially while driving. This one connects right away.
It should work exactly the same on any car with OBD2. I've tried it on different makes and can't tell any difference. Tell your buddy to wait a while for the BT to connect.

^:plus1: I was having problem with the generic orange colored BT dongle from ebay too. Now that I use the PLX Kiwi BT dongle, no problem since.
