Dropping from 5[SUP]th[/SUP] to 3[SUP]rd[/SUP]! Rattling in the steering wheel, and 10 second long beep 1 min into driving :disapointed:

I just bought a 2003 FX45 with 77 xxx miles on it. I’ve had and loved it for 5 days but today on my way back from Christmas in the home town it literally dropped out of cruise control into 3[SUP]rd[/SUP] gear. I was stuck revving at 7000rpm not even switching to manual would it let me up or downshift. I had to eventually slow to a stop in neutral, putting it into park and back into gear did nothing it would climb to no higher gear than 3[SUP]rd[/SUP] , only if I turned the car on and off again would climb the gears, I would hit highway speed for 5 or so minutes and it would happen again! This mortifying cycle continued for about 50 miles before it seemingly resolved and got me home from the most hellish drive. I have ever had. Any insight? What the hell did I just buy?

Wow, sounds serious. I would first check the AT fluid level. Other then that, it beyond my knowledge and I would seek a trans pro.

Yeah, may be as simple as a programming issue or something more serious. I would definitely take it to a pro.

Interesting... How did u know it was 3rd gear? I don't think I heard of a trans slipping like that before.

It must of been crazy. I would wait and see if it does it again because if u bring it in, they might not be able to make it happen and u waste your time.

Fluid checking is a great idea. U need a 10mm wrench/socket. Its in the back of the engine in the middle.

Thanks guys, i love the community you have here. It hasn't done it since that terrible boxing day. The engine code was P1730 (AT Interlock) but the dealer says it could be a bunch of different things and he has no idea exactly since its not doing it any longer. :(

So days later the transmission started making a terrible noise and I was forced to take it to the transmission shop. They had to get into it to diagnose it, long story short I had to get it rebuilt. Since it was already dissected we threw in the transgo shift kit and a GTM torque converter, also a Trans cooler. The engine is bone stock but the transmission is more than ready for that to change now. The mods to this unit have started ass backwards but at least I know the Trans will handle whatever that VK can give it. Time to save and plot.....
