DIY Replace Center Console Arm Rest Vinyl / Leather on 2nd Gen FX/QX70

I've seen a few of the second gen FX35's have the vinyl crack on the center console arm rest, and wanted to share how to replace it yourself with leather. The leather can be purchased on ebay already cut to size, all that is required is taking apart the armrest and gluing the new one. Total repair time is approx 1 hour.

The only tools required for this is a flat head screw driver, a Phillips screw driver, and offset screwdriver. You can use a hot glue gun or 3m fabric adhesive. The advantage of using a glue gun is if you need to pull the leather tighter in places after the glue dries, you can heat it up using a hair dryer and re position the leather.

This is the cracked original vinyl arm rest.

Here are the steps that I used for the repair:
Step 1:
Unscrew the 6 Phillips screws under the center arm rest cover

Step 2: Using a flat head screwdriver pry the edges to pop out the plastic cover.
Step 3. Once the cover is off, you will see 3 screws that I used an offset screwdriver to unscrew to remove the armrest from the console.

Step 4: Here is the armrest fully removed. Next is to un-glue the existing vinyl by pulling it off gently from the sides, it comes off fairly easily.

After the vinyl is removed you can see the foam exposed on the arm rest.

Here is the old vinyl next to the replacement leather piece.

Step5. Pull the new leather tightly over the armrest, make cuts around the perimeter where necessary and apply glue while stretching the leather.

All in all it was very easy, even for someone that has not done this sort of work before, just need a little patience. Hope this tutorial helps to encourage others!

If I had a wild hair I might even opt for the blue stitching to go with the Iridium Blue exterior on my LE LOL
That company has a lot of items for the FX/QX.....even suede covers

Very nice post. Excellent DIY instruction. That product was not around when mine started splitting. Paid $230 for new OEM console lid. What does the material cost?

Thanks for the compliment! The cost of the leather is really the only material cost and was about $50 with shipping from the ebay seller above. I was also going to replace the console lid, but then opted to try this. How is the replacement console lid holding up? Mine is a 2012, I am curious if this impacted only certain model years.

Mine is 09 and about a year ago I noticed a small split, just like in your photo. I Put off fixing it and couple weeks had several more splits and the first spot had grown to over 2" and was standing open like sliced ham. All I could find online were slip on covers. The New lid was easy to install and looks OEM because it is.....but $230, ouch!

Awesome post, ordered same part today. Only flaw on my FX and such a better option than the 350 dollar lid from Infiniti! Your fix looks better than original.

Installed this morning - same part from J and F customs - great quality. I overthought this one and only issue I had was reinstalling latch on door. Tried to check it for working before tightening all the screws, then after tightening everything worked fine. Love a 50 dollar fix versus a 400 dollar fix. I spoke with J and F and they suggested installing this pad over the old pad if it were in still in good shape. I did that and used glue gun - very happy with results.
