custom exhaust

Hi All,
Pretty much decided on FX50S now, they have a Malbec black.
Already thinking of modifying the exhaust to give it some growl, but at the same time, I really do not want ear splttingly loud! As I do goto work at 6am in the morning!!

When I looked underneath the FX, I noticed there is a small silencer in the middle, then next one is the back box at the rear.

Just wondering if I have the middle section removed, will it be enough to give me that nice V8 burble without being too loud??

Thanks in advance.

Your best bet is to cut the muffler off and weld straight pipes on.
you mean cut the backbox off? I think that could be too loud?!

You don't need to cut anything off. There are flanges aft the rear axle where custom-built pipes can be made up (mandrel bent recommend) with your choice of tips that can be attached at the flange (easy to swap in/out). The factory resonators do a good job of "pre-muffling'. But if you are concerned about this being too aggressive for your taste, resonated tips or dual sport (small) mufflers can be added. There are several write-ups on this topic within the forum, search around and you will find the info on this customization for the fx50 - including sound clips.

+1 ^ you definitely need some type of resistance and resonation. Straight pipes are a serious overkill IMO

Thanks for all the input guys! I've heard and seen some footages of the exhausts, think they are still too noisy, last thing I want is having the exhaust rumbling away whilst I scraping ice off the windows/screen in early winter morning!
I think I would keep the standard back box at the rear, and simply swap out the middle section with straight pipes, that way I think I would still have enough back pressure for engine's low end torque, but loud enough to have that V8 burbling note when under acceleration.

I agree. I would do two things:
1) Remove the stock resonator from the mid-pipe and put a straight pipe.
2) Remove the stock resonator from the mid-pipe and put a high-flow resonator.

Make sure the pipe and resonator is stainless steel. Also make sure your welder knows how to weld stainless steel. If he uses aluminum filler, your pipe will fall off after a few winters, if not sooner.

I wouldn't remove the resonators from the mid pipe but myself and a few others have done the muffler delete. There is no cutting involved, four bolts connect the muffler to the flanges of the mid pipes and then its just a matter of unhooking the stock muffler hangers. It's loud though, far from unbearable, but loud enough. On a cold start it's loud then quiets a bit, but the sound outside is not what would bother most. The newly acquired drone on the inside from a muffler delete would probably bother you more. It doesn't really bother me IMO the exhaust only growls hard in low RPMs and during constant hard acceleration, then quiets it down a bit. That being said I was recently considering small sport mufflers but if it will kill too much sound it defeats the purpose of the muffler delete. I would not want to quiet anything but a little of the interior drone. Also I drive hard and I have not noticed any kind of loss in torque as a result of the muffler delete. It wasn't until I put on my 24's that I noticed a tiny loss in initial acceleration from stop.

I also have a short sound clip posted so does JBaker.

Thanks neva4self!! I definitely would not want any drone inside, it would be unbearable! It does sound nice I have to admit, but again as per previous post, I start work 6am in the morning, it really is no go for me as I wouldn't want to make enemy with my neighbours. I have seen the exhaust diagram of the FX somewhere, that the mid section can be detached, it's held on by nuts and bolts, so no need to cut. I believe that should give me the right balance of exhaust note :smug:

However...this is now besides the point, the dealer rang and told me they got the colour wrong, it was Obsidian black , not Malbec, I was well peed off, and disappointed, so the search is on again!
I am currently waiting for Mercedes to come back to me on the A45AMG figures and availability, if they have one for me to take delivery in September, I might just go for it or the C63 which I know I could get in September, unless Infiniti find me another FX50S soon.
