I changed my oil today and only 2.5 quarts of oil came out of the car, WTF? I changed it about 5k ago and poured in 5 quarts of royal purple with a royal purple oil filter. the low oil light never came on. I know i got all the oil out because i poured 5 quarts in and checked the oil level and it was good. what do you guys think is wrong? could i be burning 2.5 quarts in my 06 fx35 in 5k miles? that's a lot isn't it?

Whoa- sounds strange-2 1/2 quarts is alot of consumption for this engine.

Are you sure only 2 1/2 came out- how did you measure it?
How long ago did you last change it?
When did you first notice it was using oil?
Was the car running ok before your latest oil change?

Leaking oil from the drainage plug? Maybe you didn't tighten it enough last time. I've had this happened when I switched the washer on my accord.

No leakage at all on the bottom of my garage or anywhere on the engine.

A: I poured the used oil back into the 5 quart jug

A: i changed it about 5 months ago

A: I didnt until i changed it today

A: i had a valve tick and posted about it but didnt think anything of it.

I think that's way too much oil to be burned. I think is a leak in the lines or in the sparks plugs.. If is not in the line it should be within the spark plugs. If is in the sparks plugs you should fix it real fast. They might be loose or the O rings might be damage.

I am thinking about checking the spark plugs next week. I am still in warranty and plan to take it in to cheryl at metro but should i take off my plenum spacer first?

Go back to the dealer and ask for a oil consumption test if you found nothing on your spark plug. Any oil stain on the bottom cover of the car? Any blue smoke from the exhaust?

Just to let you know. For the oil consumption test, the dealer will drain all the oil and pour Nissan's oil. They will ask you to come back and check the oil level every 600 miles or so to verify if the engine is burning oil.

If so, you will get a new engine.

Yeah, my brother's 2006 350z had the EXACT same problem. Failed oil consumptions test and replaced with a new engine......under warranty! Free Loaner for over a week!

Something with the 2006 VQ engines having this problem.
