Battery Maintainers

You'd have to rewire the cigarette lighter socket to have a constant 12v connection.

Slightly different approach, is it possible to trickle charge the battery through the cigarette lighter socket and avoid messing about under the hood? I park at a train station all day in the winter and I have a solar panel with a lighter plug that I'd like to leave on the dash to top off the battery. A bit paranoid, I know, but it's a short trip between home and the train station and I know it's hard on the battery in winter.

Do the solar chargers actually work? I've had iffy experiences with ones for electronics like cell phones. How big would one have to be to make a difference on a car battery? The plug in battery tenders look to be about 15 watts, a solar panel would hav to be pretty big to have that output.

Thanks, that's what I afraid of. Oh well. To Shadow191's point, it probably wouldn't have provided much of a charge to a car battery anyway.

Hooked up my Battery Tender Plus battery Maintainer. It is very compact and easy to use, it will sit in the palm of your hand..
When I first hooked it up, it charged for a few hours then after that it went into storage mode with the green light on, and stopped charging. It will monitor the battery and if required will give it a trickle charge. I have had it on for a few days now and it has just remained in storage mode and making sure the battery will be at full charge.
This will be great when I take off in the winter and don't start it for at least 6 weeks.

Picked this up last week for the Datsun. Sears had it for $25 and just couldn't pass it up. Charges and then goes to auto mode and maintains the battery charge.

That's great wayne. Is there anything you don't like about it? I'd like to pick some up for Kim and I one day.

Is this the one you have wayne?

Is there one that does everything the battery tender does, but also does charging of a battery as well as help the car start on a dead battery all in one that is recommended?

I have a couple of the Battery Tender Juniors that I use at home. On my motorcycle, I have the ring terminal adapter permanently installed with the plug hanging off the side. It makes keeping it charged throughout winter alot easy without having to remove the seat.

That's the one Jonas, I have no complaints at all about it. That is a good price, I paid about the same. You can purchase longer wires with a quick disconnect on one end and ring terminals for the battery, so you can run it out the front without even opening the hood.

Ian (you met him with the white Z4M) recommended it, he has been using one for years and electrical is his field.

I also have a bigger battery charger with a Quick start feature for dead batteries but it is much bigger and is not meant to be hooked up for long periods ( I have had it for probably 20 years).

My FX barely moves. Especially around the winter. I searched and searched for a good battery tender. CTEK is good stuff. Just picked it up on ebay. Reason i got it is that it does the optima batteries (in the fx) which require higher voltage to charge. There is a setting for the agm batteries. Here is a link. I've got one at home as well. Quick connect rings already connected so I can hook it up quickly if I'm ever out of town for a while.
