So much to do and so much to see! A lot has to do completely with your preferences.
I think the Midway Aircraft Carrier is a must see. Allow 3-4 hours. Its good anyways, but a big plus if you're a military, history, jet, or ship buff.
Old Town area is great for Mexican restaurants and homemade tortillas (good post-Sea World chow). Downtown can be busy and chaotic, but there are food favorites there too. Coronado and La Jolla are cool for low key relaxation.

+La Jolla. I think there's a nude beach hidden somewhere. I decided against a kayak excursion last month because of recent great white "issues".

Born and raised in SD. The SD Zoo remains one of the best in the world. Seaport Village is a great place to shop, eat and enjoy fantastic views. There are a bunch of nice museums in Balboa Park. The Gas Lamp District is also a neat diversion. If you can find a Roberto's restaurant, order a carne asada burrito....man, I miss those!
Afterthought...the nude beach in La Jolla is called Black's Beach. I'd recommend avoiding that unless you are into out of shape old guys...pretty much 80% of the people there. My brother dragged me there when I was 10 because he expected it to be loaded with hot girls.

Thanks guys, its nice to hear something besides tourist spots...We have no kids and going to Seaworld and the zoo are last on the list. I like hearing little places that only locals recommend. Hard to believe this, but I haven't had good mexican food since leaving Chicago 2 yrs ago. l googled Roberto's and there are tons in SD. Which Roberto's is it? Also, any seafood, chinese, bbq joints anyone can recommend? We're prolly going to hang out by Gaslamp dist. as well.

My food recommendations:
Mexican - Miguels in Old Town (although almost any mex in old town is good)
Seafood - Crab Hut in Gas Lamp/ Downtown, 5th and Broadway sounds right
BBQ - Phils BBQ is great but can be busy, (if you go I can pm you some inside scoop)
breakfast/brunch - Saint Tropez, There's a few, but the one I go to is almost across the street from the Grant Hotel (Gaslamp/Downtown)

Why did you leave? You left San Diego for Ohio? Unless you moved for a good job, I think your crazy, lol. One of my goals is to move to San Diego eventually. I have family that has a vacation home out there, so I have a lot of convincing to do for me to live there! I am so tired of the Midwest/Chicago.

If only I had a nickel for everytime I've been asked that question. No...not a great job, a great wife. Unfortunately, our daughters have only one living grandparent...my wife's mother. We're here so our kids can be around her and to look after her when the time comes she can no longer do so. All in all...it's not too bad here. After being in the Army for 10 years, anywhere I'm not getting shot at is a good place to call home. As anyone who's been married a little while knows 1) You can only be as happy as the least happy person in a relationship and 2) Happy wife, happy life.

Pretty much all of them...it's a chain. It started with one taco shop, Roberto's #1, in National City. There are a bunch of "knockoffs" too, Alberto's, Hilberto's, Gilberto's, Berto's....they're all good, but Roberto's was the original and best in my opinion. The burritos are huge! Again, carne asada or another excellent choice is chorizo with cheese. Hijo de la chingada....a mi gusto la comida de Mexicana!! Oh yeah...fish tacos, baja style...mmmmmmm.
