So, its time for my wife to get a new car and she got her sights set on either Acura MDX or VW Touareg. We are looking at low miles, 2011, 2012 model. Was just curious, if any members here had any experience with either one of the cars and would love to hear any suggestions...

If you're sticking with the V6 Touareg, I would go with that. The fiance has an 09 Teg and loves it.

I almost bought a Teg instead of the FX because I wanted a V8 and something other than a regular American SUV.

Decent reviews, good engine, creature comforts are nice, I didnt care for the outdated interior styling.

Acura MDX styling isnt my cup of tea, but if she likes it and the engine is peppy enough, may be a cheaper alternative.

From my personal experience, I would take the 2011-2012 MDX any day. There are many packages that you can choose from, I would go with the advanced package because it comes with the 20'' rims . It seats 8 passengers, comes with plenty of power (300 hp) and many tech features. Also excellent in snow conditions thanks to the SH-AWD system. The only thing that I dislike are the center console buttons. Overall, I would highly recommend this car.

Sorry if this is a long post to read but sometimes details make the difference..

A friend of mine had the 2012 Acura MDX...he sold it three weeks ago because it eats gas. But I'm not surprised since Honda/Acura is still young in the big engine market.

Aside from that, they're overpriced and flimsy. If you want to see how flimsy they are, open the driverside window completely and squeeze the door by holding the outside and inside door panel with one hand. You'll see how easily the door flexes. This is not a feature its Honda's way of saving money. I would also check crash tests and insurance rates since they seem to be now more dependent on that.

I used to be a Honda/Acura fan in the late 90's, but they haven't changed, so I changed the brand.

As for the Toureg, since we're all in the automotive realm, we tend to come across discussions that may later become of great importance. So when I was at a tire shop getting a set of new tires, there was a lady who was complaining that her tires were worn after a year of usage.

Long story short, the representative from Yokohama was there as well and they basically stated that the Toureg is a very heavy German vehicle and because of that, there's no tire that will last on that car for more than a year's worth of driving.

She had the most expensive Yokohama tires put on at the time and she didn't drive that much on them either (I cant' remember the specifics) but these tires worn in a 1/3 of their guaranteed lifespan. Yokohama gave her some money towards a new set, she bought new tires and sold the Toureg. The Toureg apparently is on the list of vehicles that tire warranties do not apply for that simple issue.

Funny thing I heard about the Toureg through other people in other places for the same issue (I get around shops a lot). Also if you were to buy cheaper tires for the Toureg, you'd be changing them much sooner than a year (She tried that). That lady had three sets in 2 years. Crazy!!

Other Suggestions?

Depends on requirements but there's no much option these days for something solid...

- Infiniti EX35
- Toyota RAV4
- Toyota Highlander

Can't think of others right now, most cars out there are just not up to par

MDX would probably be more reliable; only because Hondas typically have less issues than anything made by VAG. Friend has a 2014, he loves it, but too new to say if reliable or not. Neighbor has a 2010, they like it and no issues.

What are your needs? Do you need the 3rd row? Both are big vehicles so make sure you need that room.

Thanks for suggestions guys. We do need a bigger vehicle as this is going to be a "family" to take kids for vacations, etc. We also have parents who love to go places with us, so the third row would be definitely a plus. V6 would definitely suffice...

New generation teg is a big improvement, the old generation garnered a lot of negative attention, some deserved, some not.

MDX is a safe bet, but not my cup of tea.

On the issue of tires, the FX is a heavy SUV/CUV, doesn't seem to suffer from tires wearing after 2 years (unless you drive it in a certain manner).

my uncle has been driving mdx's for past 10 years and never looked back( going on his 5th this year). reliable, powerful, tons of room in the trunk, and can tow up to 7000 pounds. i drove it with a 3500 pound boat and i didnt even notice the boat back there at all.
