It looks like I am going to need a 5mm spacer for the front of my FX50S to fit my new wheels. I have been doing research about the need for longer studs for the 5mm spacer and everything I've read seems split right down the middle and very car/wheel setup dependent. Seems like 12mm seat length for the lug nuts is the magic number - is this accurate?

It's not really car dependent, it's dependent on the thread pitch of the lug nuts. On a Honda that runs 12x1.5 studs, they typically recommend 6 turns or so for full engagement. On a Nissan that runs 12x1.25 studs, it's 8 turns. So go to your car, take a lug nut off, see how many turns you get before it's fully threaded and tight. For a 5mm spacer, it works out to 4 turns x 1.25mm for a 5mm thick spacer. So add that 4 to the 8 and you get 12. If you have 12 or more turns right now, your lug nuts are long enough. Otherwise, you need longer studs. For most cars though, a 5mm lug nut doesn't require longer studs. Best to check though.

On 1st gens, longer studs are not necessary for anything 5mm or less. I went through this with my GTR's, keep in mind that wheteher or not the wheels have a conical seat or not also affects engagement.

It is expected that a Shank type seat will not get as much engagement as a conical seat.

Most aftermarket wheels still use a conical seat I think? So OP, you probably need new lug nuts with the wheels you're getting.
