2012 FX35 Oil Change

Hi everybody,

This is my first post here. Just want to greet everybody and ask my first question. I have 2012 FX35 AWD.

My car just hit 6500 miles and it's time to do an oil change. My daily commute it's pretty high and mostly highways so I decided to go for Schedule 2 service. Talked to the local dealer and the said that FX35 is using mineral oil and I could use synthetic oil instead but I would still need to bring the car for oil change every 7500 miles. Which kind of looses the point of using synthetic oil. Also isn't the 7500 miles too much for mineral oil? I had an old Honda Accord before and had to change its oil every 3000 miles.

Could you guys please share your experience of engine oil change.

Thanks,
Ruben

Moderators, please move this thread to "FX Tech (2009+)FX (09+) - FX35 Engine & Drivetrain" forum instead. For some reason it gets into 03-08 section. Thanks.

I just change my oil with Mobil 1 Extended Performance every 3750 miles. I could go with a longer interval but I just do it for peace of mind.

That would mean oil changes every 2 months. This would be kind of an overkill. This car is driven mostly on highways.

huh? Every two months? Dude I change mine every 3750 miles and by the time I hit that interval the motor oil has already been in the car for 6 months. So technically my motor oil gets changed twice a year cause I don't drive it much it stays parked most of the time.

The VQ35HR engine is our FXs has proven to be a little harder on motor oils than something like your Honda was. I had an Acura TL and could easily go 7,000-8,000 miles between oil changes (confirmed with Blackstone Labs oil testing). I change the oil in my FX every 5,000 and use synthetic. If I used conventional oil, I'd do every 3,000.

Highway miles or not, it needs to be changed sooner rather than later. Cheap insurance.

Well, my wife's dail commute is quite high. Just only for work this car is drivel 2k miles every month. That's why I was thinking about ways to prolong oil change intervals.

So, I did the first oil change at 6200miles. I hope it does not cause any damage, right? Its still within manufacturer spec.

What would be the best synthetic oil that you would recommend to use for VQ35HR engine? Mobil1? Pensoil Ultra? Amsoil?
I'm thinking to take my own ol and bring it to the service dep and pay just for the labor and have them use my oil.

well if its highway miles then change it every 7k, i use mobil 1 syntetic. Id say go with the mobil 1 extended performance synthetic

Many of the Infiniti Dealers in the US and Canada that I have been to stock Mobil 1 synthetic oil. That is another reason I use it, when I'm on my trips I get my oil changed there.

I'm sure 6,000 miles on the first change was fine, particularly if it's mostly highway. No damage to worry about. Actually, a little wear is good when breaking in the engine.

There are threads about different synthetics. To each is own, I guess. I use Mobil 1 as it's what my dealer stocks and it's convenient. But I like Dracula's suggestion if you are going to do extended oil change intervals of 6,000+ miles: Mobil 1 Extended Performance.

Thanks for comments! I've been reading this thread for last few days. Very interesting topic. I guess I would need to choose between Mobil 1 Extended and Pennzoil Ultra.

Manufacturer recommends either {3000-4000} miles or every 3 months , so if you do it every 6 months that's about twice as long as the recommended interval...

As for Synthetics vs regular oil - the only real benefit of using Synthetic is if you live in extreme climate conditions, ie: extremely cold or extremely hot, the Synthetic oil is easier on the engine in those conditions and MAY contribute to longer engine life over using regular oil.

However Synthetic does not give you any benefit of running longer mileage between oil changes. Synthetic or not , stick to the recommended intervals.

I use synthetic and I go by mileage, not by time. Sometimes I have changed my oil twice in 1 1/2 months and sometimes it gets changed in 4 or 5 months. For me it all depends on my mileage.

^ Time is critical too...I probably wouldn't let yours go past 4 months and if you let yours sit for 1 month straight, even more of a reason to change your oil sooner....oil breaks down with age even with no mileage added to it because contaminants in the oil when dirty and sitting, plus the humidity, etc all break down oils. Oil uncontaminated in the jug is another much different scenario. You will notice oil more black after sitting for a long time in your engine instead of being driven...my parents have their car sit frequently for longs periods and have witnessed it a few times. Somestimes it's gotten so bad (even with synthetic) that it stained the dip stick and never could get it cleaned off. I consider mileage use, time, and how much the car sits in used dirty oil all critical pieces to the calculation of when to change your oil.

Also critical in 6000+ oci, only use premium oil filters. The Bosch D+ and Mobil 1 EP filters are certified upto 15,000 mile intervals. KN, Royal Purple, Bosch, WIK, Pureone, are all good for 7500 miles.

*Do not do 15,000 mile oci on this car even with Mobil 1 EP and EP/D+ filters. Infiniti engines abuse oil and I don't see them going past 7000 miles on any oil/ filter combo.

I consulted my dealer in TX and was told to stick to regular oil and do it every 3750mi or so. With these modern engines I don't doubt them.
