2009 FX50 Off Road adventure!

today I took my FX to a well known local restaurant that you need 4x4 to get there... it's a 10-15 deg uphill dirt and rocky trail that ends in a parking lot for the local place, nothing fancy, local food and drinks!

I put the tranny in manual mode, 1st gear and snow mode on, vdc off. Going up was smooth except for one spot where dumb me decided to stop for pics and then the FX didn't want to pull ahead but instead spun one front and one rear tire... I let it creep backwards a little and gave it gas again and all was good! Going down was a little scary, I could feel the weight of the vehicle and had to be extra smooth with the brakes or it would slide. Next time I'll lower the tire pressures for sure! They have a Military 6x6 truck they use to ferry people up and down when you don't want to drive there and I've done that before so I really wanted to drive this time. I'm sure with low tire pressure it'll go even better. I sure wish there was a way to lock the awd split to 50:50. It was fun, only scary going down I was always preparing on how to act in case I started to slide without control...

It would be tense on the downhill run if it started to rain heavily while you were in the restaurant. I would imagine it would get pretty greasy then.

I really want to complain about taking the FX off road but at the same time it's always nice to see a luxury SUV parked next to 4x4 jeeps and the like, showing it can handle itself off road.

Reminds me when I took my 1st gen FX up 'the mountain' - a popular 4x4 spot near my school in PA - and it handled itself well as other got stuck.

As long as you give her a nice wash after putting her to work climbing the mountain, power to you.

I found that it is easier to go up than down - car has tendency to slide
as mentioned would be great to be able to block 50-50

Looks very similar to a place I went to in Puerto Rico years back.. Definitely need awd or 4x4 to get up to that restaurant..

For going downhill, would it help to switch to use "Snow Mode" button, and using manual shift to leave in 1st gear to crawl down while using the brakes?
