2004 FX35 Ignition Coils burned and misfire

Hello Folks,

I have a problem with my 2004 FX35 which was running perfect till the AC wouldn't work. Then I took it to the shop and the mechanic got it fixed the AC. Then got a misfire and burned all 6 ignition coils and the car wouldn't start since then. He was saying may be the ECU went bad so I had to buy used ECU but still he couldn't figure out the problem. Anyone has an idea or experienced the same issue before? Your help will be greatly appreciated.

He probably shorted something out and that's frying the coil packs. If you had one or two failing, that could be the ECU. But for all 6 to go after a repair, that points to a wiring issue. It would be rare for the ECU to fry all 6 at once. Have him check all your wiring and grounds. Especially where he was working on the AC.

How well do you know this mechanic? If you trust him, then maybe you are having just bad luck. However, if you do not know him well, I would let the dealer take a look. Your present mechanic could be taking you for a ride. FYI- I would let only the dealership or very well known shops look at the FX, because of how complicated it is. The dealership will check your car and tell you whats wrong, then you could take it somewhere else with a clear understanding of whats wrong. Some smaller shops could milk you by having you chase down costly problems without a solution, which could have you spending more than what the dealership would charge to fix it the first time.

I think you changed the ECU too early, this is kind of a big problem and requires troubleshooting before replacing any major parts "blindly i would say" like the ECU, i would have first scanned the car and seen if there are any trouble codes.

you can still scan the car with ignition key on AC position - no need to have the engine running since you can't have it running now any way. Tell me what you get and we will take it from there.

Same issue I had, dealer replace ground wire, that didn't work so they replace ECU, that was the cause,

Thank you everyone for your replies. Yes he was saying something about the ground so I'll take it to the dealer to get it checked then. But I still have the old ECU as well just in case I needed.
