plasti dip whole car ?

yea I don't think I would dip a stock car, if it was modified then sure I would. FX45Motion or what ever his name is has done it a few times I believe.

Also all the emblems and grill on my vehicle held up really well and I drive through snow and grime for 6 months out of the year

Look through pages like 12 to 21 on iMotions photobucket:

You can see how many times he went through re-dipping pieces of his car and how it still didn't look perfect.

The last few pictures show how much hassle taking off the dip can be. I've heard horror stories of picking dip out of the cracks and crevices for months after.

Keep in mind I think iMotion did his car with PD cans, not a gun (he should confirm), nonetheless i'm pretty sure he will say he was much happier with the car wrapped than dipped.

Like I said previously, I'm also not a fan of plastic dipping the whole car. Although one trick to make removal easier is putting on lots and lots of dip......

yea well dipping it with cans might be the problem there. You need a pretty thick and even layer of this stuff to be removed easy. Also I don't think he used a base coat on that FX either.

This guys rx7 turned out great I think

In flattering pictures I can get even a car painted with house paint to look nice.

Look at the video posted at that link from like 40 - 42 seconds, you can see the poor texture.

Yes poor installation by people who don't know what they are doing is a big part of the problem though. Vinyl went through that stage as well, where noobs who had no idea what the fuck they were doing were wrapping everything.

Since plastidip came out though luckily most of the clowns who don't know dick have moved to that medium. You don't often see botched up wrap jobs anymore.

yea I can't see videos at work so I didn't watch those, so maybe you're right. And yea, you will always have that textured look from dip, can't get it paint smooth.
I just think it's a good alternative if you're gonna do it yourself every 6 months to a year for shits and giggles. Wrapping the car professionally where I am is in the 4-5k range. I don't think that would be worth it at all if you just want a quick change for a short period of time.

Yeah absolutely, quick colour changes are where PD shines.

I've seen dipped cars that looked like they were painted with house paint. There was so much texture it looked like they took a paint roller to them.

The thing about vinyl is that if you get a really good wrap job, it looks great. There are poorly done ones, but when executed perfectly, the result is really great. Never quite to the level of paint, but it's close. With plastidip, even when executed perfectly it still doesn't look all that good in real life. Perfect spray job, it's still going to look like rubber and in sunlight, you can see the uneven parts of the job where some parts are sprayed thinner than others, it doesn't blend at all. It really only works in dark matte colors because those colors hide the imperfections. There's an S7 that rolls around here that's been dipped and it looks decent other than the texture. But there's also a G35 that is done in chameleon (same as the RX-7 in that link)- it looks pretty good while rolling, but the other day, I caught a glimpse of it in bright sunlight and you could totally see the spray patterns. It would look awesome in pictures though.

i had mine plastidipped matte white for about 6 months, didnt really like it but that was personal taste....it wont messup the clearcoat on there at all and its gone take about 5 gallons to do the whole fx

I own a VR4 that used to be Plasti-Dip (previous owner) still finding that crap in every nook and cranny....

This past weekend, just saw a BMW 328 dipped orange - sort of like the OEM M3 color but matte. From 20 ft. away, it looked decent. Then he pulled up next to me and we were stuck at a light so I got a really good look. It was so horrible up close, orange overspray all over the black dipped trim which had an awful texture. Rims were dipped black and I think he got part of the tires too. You could also see if peeling a little bit in the gaps between body panels. To top it off, he put an M badge on there. This was probably the worst dip I've seen in a while.

Stereotyping a bit now, but I'm feeling that plastidip for all the kids now modding who want instant gratification and IG likes. That's almost all it's good for. In real life it looks horrible, but it's quick, easy, and looks good in pictures. I'm sure this guy has a ton of likes on IG where people tell him how awesome his car is, but in real life it was so sad. When I was heavily into modding cars, there was one option for a color change, you repainted your car. My car spent 6-8 weeks in the body shop each time I wanted the color changed. Now if you want a color change, you can get it wrapped in a few days or a week. But maybe that's still not quick or cheap enough so people half ass dip it in a couple of hours and it looks worse than when it started. Dip is like stick on vents; it's for people who don't know how to mod a car.

I still don't understand why people are so crazy about plasti dip. Even doing little trim pieces look like shit after awhile. It's kind of ghetto IMO

I agree with you Rip, I hate the look. It is good as a temporary means to see how a piece would look, but only very temporary.

Exactly, plus on a $50k + car why not do it the right way and get it painted or wrapped if you like the look.

That's exactly what I did with my emblems. I wanted to see how everything looked before I committed to a permanent paint treatment. Try before you buy.
