Question: tpms for new wheels

Hey guys...

Newbie here.

I'm looking to get some new summer rims for my 07fx35. I found a place that can get me a set of 6 spoke 21" from the 09 fx50. But they don't have TPMS. (my original 18' rims with TPMS have on my winter tires right now)
The shop I'm dealing with said they can get & program new aftermarket TPMS for my car for $70 each.

My questions are:

1. do I need to get OEM TPMS sensors from the dealer? or will aftermarkets work fine?
2. is this something that needs to be programmed at the dealer or will I be fine getting it programmed at the shop?

This is my first time ordering aftermarket wheels and TPMS, so I just want to make sure that the TPMS will function the same way as they do on my original 18" rims.
Thanks for all the help! This forum is amazing for providing great info!

Aftermarket toms will work just fine and the shop needs a consult computer to program the tpms to the car. You can also bring the car to the dealer and have them program it after the wheels and tires are on the car for about $25.

Search the site for tpms and you will find more info. There's a link somewhere to a cheaper brand.

You can get aftermarket sensors for $100 new for set of 4. I forget the part numbers, but you can Google it. And pay a tire shop $20 to reprogram or many Discount Tires offer this as a free service. $70 each is way high these days, that was the going rate like 7-8 years ago when fewer shops had the equipment.

^This.

I did my tires at Tire Rack in the States, and they sold me and programmed my 4 TPMS for 25 buck each, and the installation and programming was included in the mounting, balancing and installation of the wheels.

For anyone wondering, I dug up my bill:

-4 hankook Ventus RH06's
-4 TPMS
-install 25mm spacers on front tires (spacers were supplied by me)
-Install, balance, programming of all components
-Alignment (cause I had recently done lowering springs)

all this totalled to $1117.46. That includes all the environment levies, and taxes.

Thanks for the info and quick reply!! I'll look around now that you mention that I can get them cheaper. I was almost just going to do it because the shop is providing everything (wheels, tires and powder coating)

Something else I was wondering:
Is it absolutely necessary to install TPMS on my summer rims? Or can I go without TPMS for my summer rims and have TPMS back when I switch to my OEM 18" in the winter.
I'm assuming the worst thing would be that the light would be on all the time. It wouldn't bother me much, but my wife drives our FX most of the time with the kids...so I'm not sure if it would be an issue for her or if she would ever even check tire pressure?(probably not)

No driveability or safetty issues not using TMPS in a TMPS optioned car. Just the annoying amber flat tire light stay lit the whole time with wheels without TMPS sensor in them,

I bought qty 4 TPMS sensors on eBay (or maybe it was Amazon) for $80 shipped - the orange ones, SD05 I believe.. my local discount tire installed them for $10 each, and was able to program them and reset my TPMS light on the dash.

discount tire is telling me that if I buy rims from them...that by law they are not allowed to install them on my vehicle without TPMS sensors.
I guess I'll look online and see if I can find a set.

Thanks for all the help!

Under what law?

Doesn't sound right, but then again I am a Canadian, and our laws are different, so it may very well be true.

Does seem like a stupid law though, TPMS is not safety equipment, its convenience equipment.

Ask them which law they are referring to.

Can't be a legal requirement. Maybe a store policy. Likely total B.S.
Also keep in mind that if you reprogram new summer wheel sensors, you'll have to do the reprogram back to the winters and every time you swap. I think most of the seasonal set up members choose either winter or summer to use the TPMS.
FWIW, I don't mind the dash light being on. I know what it means, I know why it's on, and I keep a visual eye on the tires condition just like the good ole days before TPMS.

There is a DIY on here about reprogramming yourself.

I did it once, worked, but it was a little finicky. Now I just swap the wheels and quickly stop by my dealer and they program at no charge (note: i have a good relationship with my dealer).

Anyone know which tpms i can use with my 21's on a 2013 fx37 computer system? Or if anyone have the part number of the oem, that would be great also.

I recall a few threads in the past that had part numbers to oem and links to aftermarket parts. A quick Search should yield answers.
