I forgot to post about 1 month ago i was driving on the highway from ny to boston with the music up loud and the windows closed, when another car pulled up next to me honking the horn trying to tell me my bumper fell off i got nervous pulled over on the side of the road and notice my front chin spoiler blow over and was only held up by the two corner bolts. i dont know how long it was like that for but here are the pics

Wow, that's sucks. Second of such incident that I can remember. Review the installation instruction that Wayne posted up sometime ago, there is nothing really there to secure the upper portion of the lip other then 6 adhesive retainers as in step W (Fig 15). I wonder in addition to using the retainer clips as in step W (Fig 15) in the installation instructions, add a couple nice black screws or rivet into the top inner would help.

I know my suggestion will have drilling into the bumper, but you're already drill into the side as it is instructed. I would drill in a heart beat now that I see how it attached. Add a couple rivets, push pins (like the oem type you see everywhere on the car), or nice black screws in those spots will not destroy the looks in my eyes, but definitely save on a replacement. That lip is too expensive to lose.

Can you ascertain the cause by looking at it?

im not sure sure but i maybe from change of weather in ny and the water from washing my car maybe lessen the strengh of the 3m tape after years, and the wind in the highway in 6 hr trip ripped it right down and by the time i noticed it was too late. my friend who has a body shop suggested that on my next spoiler we use rivets on the side to hold it more stable

you right i think we took it forgranted because we install it the way the directions tell us too,but i recommend anyone from now to use couple extra black screws and some rivets in places you cant really notice to keep this from happening to anyone else . not only that but now i have to spend $550 more for a new spoiler when i could have used that cash to put toward getting my side skirts

List of People this has happened to:

1. jbaker
2. Me
3. dwaynedadon
4. Mike10fx

I was thinking the same thing. That's just the members of IS that have shared their experience. It probably happens to a lot more people than we know of. Maybe somebody should look into seeing if Infinti will start taking responsibility for their OEM lip coming off after a while, like they did with the bubbling dash issue on the 1st Gens.

Unfortunately this will probably mean they stop offering aero kits in the future. :disapointed:

Surprise Surprise.
Sorry it had to happen to another.

I had it taken care of under warranty. Hopefully you all can do the same.
These were not designed with the idea of people going fast or driving long distances in warm weather I presume...(maybe why they didnt push it?)

I havent gotten around to adding extra support to mine, but it made the trip from Westchester to Buffalo just fine so I guess it's a matter of time....
Luckily the fitment was much better the second time around

The thing I noticed is everyone started having problems with their lip during the summer aka warmer weather.

Instead of those cheap plastic screw pins that mount the bottom I used 6mm bolts with washers. Another thing is that if your using the 3m mounting tape, 3m recommended the use of their 3m adhesion promoter. It makes the bond 2 times as tight as before. I'm very surprised the OEM instructions for the lip didn't recommend this. Every body kit I always used whether its an aftermarket roof spoiler or trunk spoiler or side skirt always recommended to use the adhesion promoter

Good suggestions Aaron^^

As far as being affected by heat, I tend to disagree. I installed my front spoiler myself on my 09. I drove it on a 10,000 mile trip across Canada and back through the US. The following year I drove from my place in Ontario to Chicago then to California and back. On these trips I drove for hours in 100F temperatures at higher speeds and also in freezing temps in the mountains. When I traded my FX this year the spoiler was still rock solid.

But, when I install my new spoiler on my fX50 I will probably include your suggestions on the install for extra security.

well i dragged mines for so far that it put holes corners i just ripped it off and left it right on the ground how pissed i was

+1 on the 3M tape promoter. I use it anytime I want a semi-permanent adhesion when I use 3M double sided tape. Though its not easy to come by in amounts bigger than small alcohol pad sized pads. If you are having trouble finding it try Googling: BOND PREP PROMOTER PEN 4298. This should turn up results for a 5oz. 3M promoter pen that has a tip like a marker and works very well.

3M tape is finicky to use; if the surface is perfectly clean and you use adhesion promoter and you apply constant pressure and the temperature is good, it will hold just about forever. But if any of those isn't quite right, there can be issues. Also, it doesn't really like temperature fluctuations nor push/pull motions after it's installed. By that I mean, if you wiggle it enough, it will eventually let go. I used to own a company that manufactured interior dash kits and we used a ton of 3M tape, that's how dash kits install. So I've had a lot of experience with this stuff and having to warranty kits when the tape didn't hold, etc.

It's not a great solution for a lip spoiler in my opinion. I'm surprised that's Infiniti's solution for this. BMW uses actual glue to hold their spoilers on, it's called Betalink and once that stuff has cured, it's very, very hard to get the part off. So either glue it, or use screws and washers. Even regular screws won't hold forever, eventually they will pull out due to the forces the spoiler sustains from wind and such. On my BMW, I installed a carbon splitter and used bolts and washers to install it (hidden). I used 3M tape to hold it up while installing, and considered not bolting it in, but tested it by pushing on the splitter and the tape let go pretty quickly.
