front lip almost came flying off

Heard this fapping noise on my front bumper and I get out and I see the front lip has come unattached from the bumper. Thankfully I caught this early cause Jbakers came off too but it flew off on the highway. Mine didnt come completely off so there is zero damage. But right now its hanging down.

I dont know how Jbakers came off but I know mine has to do from it being taken off too many times. I think twice. Here is what I noticed:

Both side mounting tabs broke that the side cover holds into place:

Broken side tab that the side cover above hooks on to:

Front lip hanging down now very loose:

Mounting tape has failed even though when it was taken off new 3m tape was used:

Now I can literally shake it with my hand thats how loose the spoiler lip is. I could take it back to martino auto concepts and they would order me a new one. But that would have to be painted because it wont match my brand spanking new paint job even though the lip already comes painted since my whole car was repainted last year. Or I could put new 3M mounting tape on and epoxy new tabs on for the lip to stay attached to the side covers. The thought of getting a new lip and going threw paint seems like a headache to me though.

Thanks bro thats why im debating on trying to get a new one and have to leave her over there or just fix it myself and see how it goes. Leaving it there seems like a bigger hassle.

Dam man that sucks, luckily it didn't fly off. Now I'm worried about mine coming off

Sucks Aaron, you are very lucky it didn't come right off like Jordan's.

crazy Aaron! Glad you are safe and not much damage. I was going to ask if you ever had it removed and such but you already answered that question. I think key here is install it correct (not dealer) and don't mess with it afterwards. Plastic is plastic.

Yes I agree with you Jonas. I think it should be installed yourself which I did by the way and not by the dealer or anyone else. Most likely they ignore the instructions.

For me even though I installed it myself, it was removed a few times when my car was repainted. If you look at the clip that broke off its really thin and fragile. Im sure removing the lip twice weakened it and it broke off. There is actually another clip like that one that sits above it but that one broke off and I cant find it. Must of lost it on the highway.

Is there any possibility at all that someone tried to steal it but couldn't get it completely off so left it or didn't have enough time to take it off? We did have at least one guy east coast where his aero lip got stolen and resold on ebay.

Is there a more permanent attachment option than 3m tape? there aren't any screws on them? if not a body shop may be able to bondo on some kind of bolt and attach with that instead.

Its possible it could of happened but had to be at a store cause my car is garaged almost 95% of the time.

All the more reason for guys to double check the fitment to make sure nothings loose.

Just like roof racks and such, you should be checking and snugging everything up periodically.

The tabs on my lip on the driver side are broken off as well. I ordered some Sikaflex and will also be using 3M automotive molding tape to secure it. I'm open for more suggestions on how to make the lip more secure.

Damn, like Rip said, now I'm worried mine might fall off too. This is the second case of front lip failure in the last month or two!

I believe one very important step prior to installing the lip is clean the mounting area extremely well with a strong mix of dish soap and water, a good rinse and dry then a thorough wipe down with alcohol to make sure the 3m tape adheres solidly. When I got rid of my 09FX the lip was solid as a rock on there at all the 3m tape sites.

Yup thats what I did. I even installed it in the recommended room temp too ad never let it get wet for 24 hours as per the instructionsn

Right on Aaron and I did the same.

On my FX50, the Dealer put some sort of shiny black plastic dressing on the lower black trim that really seems hard to get off, I want to make sure I get all of that off before my lip install on this FX. Any other suggestions of what to use to make sure it is stripped off?

Aaron, you can use 3m double sided tape or for better and permanent solution use betalink glue. This is a factory glue from BMW used to glue front splitters, diffusers, wings and etc. It works really well. Google it and check the links from m3post
