Lug Nut Help! GTR rims

Its normal for an open end lug nut to rust inside in the climate like yours. The inside is not protected at all.

I came across these NRG spline drive lug nuts. Looks like each nut is a locker.

$125 seems to be the universal retail price for this 21 piece set. I was in the K&N store today and they had them for $125 plus 50% off sale going on right now. These are forged aluminum and come in a variety of colors.
I wonder how good these are.

Now I noticed that this ad says for off road use only.
I wonder why? Maybe not heavily tested enough to stick their necks out for liability reasons??

99% of aftermarket parts say for off road use only. No company will stick their necks out like that.

^^^ What he said. A part like a lug nut won't be tested much at all. They're basically built to a certain spec by factories which are usually certified. But in the aftermarket world, they're not going to do their own testing. Most everyone gets their lug nuts from similar factories and just puts them in different packaging. I personally wouldn't run aftermarket aluminum lug nuts even though lots of people do. Just don't see the purpose and you have to baby them all the time or you'll strip them on install. Torque spec for factory lugs is 80 ft/lbs? I knew someone who stripped his at 90 or so. I know Rays are aluminum and Porsche uses aluminum; but that's a far step from those guys to most aftermarket "manufacturers".

Guys, I am confused. I was always under the impression that the newer GTR wheels used the shank style lug nuts with the flat washers.

You are correct, they do use the shank style lug nuts. Most newer Infiniti's and Nissans do, I believe they swapped to that style on the 2nd gen G's. Did they do it on the FX? People often get confused between the two style since they thread on the same. But the contact area for a conical lug nut on a wheel that requires a shank style will be smaller.

Thanks, so it sounds like some guys are using the wrong lug nuts on them.
Yes, the 2nd Gen FX uses the shank style lug nut on the OEM wheels.

The EX uses the shank style also. I had to get separate lug nuts for my spare.

Aluminum lug nuts blow.

^ that's what I figured. Even if they work out fine, it just sounds like a bad idea.

so if i get oem 2nd gen lug nuts it should work? i dont care about weight really. looks alittle but not top priority. maybe gorilla lug nuts since its harden steel

I don't think the OEM nuts with the washer work with the GTR wheels. If they did, I'm guessing the dealership would have used them when they tore up my Rays lugs, as opposed to having to find some that work, ending up with OEM style small open ended nuts.

GTR wheels use the acorn/tapered style ...2nd gen nuts will not work with them

Holy cow, I keep getting told opposite answers.
I believe you Jeff, since you work at Infiniti/Nissan.
Thanks so much for straightening this out.
I better delete my above posts.

thanks for clearing that up a bit. just so im on the same page as everyone,
the gtr uses "acorn/ tapered seat"?
2nd gen would be considered the "mag seat w/ washer" type?
1st gen uses "ball seat" type?

Unfortunately, I don't have any that I know are for sure OEM nuts, but I grabbed the Rays and Muteki I've used on the GTR wheels, and the OEM washer style I have.

It seems that the washer style actually has the same angle seat, so it might fit, but then might not actually tighten down the wheel.

Jeff is spot on, tapered or acorn style is the correct one.

I believe this is more or less the normal style for most "tuner" type lugs. Muteki, Rays, BWR, etc. all have this tapered style, and that is what you need.

I bought my aluminum BWR lugs for like 60 bucks. They come in like every imaginable colour, look pretty cool (you can get them in a plain colour as well), and after having removed them and reinstalled various times they still look really good.

The only thing you have to be careful about is not to use a gun on them. Just torque them by hand and be consistent in your force when removing them, don't start bouncing on the handle of your breaker bar trying to get them loose.
