Have to sell, 13 Toureg or Honda pilot

I just had a baby and as we all know the Fx is on the small side. We have looked at the JX and not a fan of the wagon look. We love the 13 Toureg, high line fully loaded and the pilot touring. 2 different animals, has anyone one the forum moved into or know someone with either. One day I will have 2 kids so we will need some room, scared the toureg may be a tad small. We are not looking at the diesel as they r 68 k and out of range as far as price.

I don't think the FX is too small. My wife and I take our two Grandkids on day trips quite often and there is lots of room even with their two car seats.

I do like the Toureg.

Agree on all counts. Two adults, two child seats, two diaper bags, and two strollers is no problem in the FX.

..and the Toureg is awesome. The v10 tdi makes me tingle.

My cousin carried his 2 kids, his wife, strollers with their bags in the FX with no problem for some time.

Realistically there is not that much more room in a toureg then an fx. Maybe additional trunk space because of the boxy shape but they look about the same from the outside.

I have a colleague at work with a Pilot and there's a lot of room in them and he has two daughters plus wife. No complaints from him. From a utility standpoint with two kids and all the stuff that goes along with, I would say go for the Pilot.

Speak of my own experience. I have one 3 yr old and a 2 month old. My FX has plenty of room to take them around. Of course, I always have to fold my strollers to get them in, not like some mom can just ditch the stroller directly into the cargo area of their mini vans. I also have a trailer hitch on my FX which makes it very useful when I need to carry extra laugages. Just get one of those hitch mount cargo carrier then you have an extra of 40 cubic ft of space at the back. As for Toureg and pilot, why not an MDX? The price is similar to Toureg but with more rooms. And the sh-awd handles very well with snows.

I find it tight in the Fx with one child seat. Hit Costco and its tight in the back with the stroller. I have a roof pod for trips but they don't hold a lot of weight. The toureg is wider and longer. It is boxier than the fx and more rear legroom also. Is the newer fx bigger, mine is an 07. The pilot is big and utilitarian, but no luxury . I'll try it for a few months, see how it goes but it's getting older and the trade in value will drop as time goes by.

Pilot is biggest of the three. I was considering it at one point but decided to go minivan. Love the touareg ESP the diesel, but its pricey. Still have the FX as wifey drives the minivan, but FX is def small when u have kids. We use the minivan if we go anywhere as a family.

Just for the record we have a 4 and 2 year old. The mini is big enough....;)

I agree, The Acura MDX would be a good selection as well.

My vote is for the Pilot. My parents have one and it's got tons of space - my dad was a little disappointed after they got it because he came from a Suburban, but with the back seats taken out, it has just as much cargo room as the Suburban did.

When I was looking for my FX, I test drove a few Touaregs and was very unimpressed - they really didn't seem to have much more room. You're really just gaining headroom in the backseat and additional space up top in the cargo area. If you can use the room higher up, it may be an upgrade, but very slight even at that.

A FX and a Minivan is a perfect combo for family with kids. I do find the FX is a bit tight for family of 5. FX with family of four should be sufficient. If I have to choose among the three and roominess is my primary concern, I would vote the Pilot. Honestly, I have no feel for the newer Pilot! I would rather drive a Minivan if I have to choose between a Pilot and a Minivan.

I absolutely hate minivans (no offense Ed)

Yeah my wife hates them as well, I couldn't see myself in one personally but then again there are those that feel the same about our FX's.

Lol, every time we see a driver driving stupidly or carelessly, my wife will say "It figures, it's a van"

The seven-seat Cross-Blue SUV -- with an ultra-frugal diesel-electric hybrid powerplant -- is Volkswagen’s next move to tap into the North American market.
The CrossBlue “concept” on show in Detroit follows previous VW concepts in being near production-ready. The concept vehicle is on show with six separate seats but VW product head Dr Ulrich Hackenberg says the production version will have a more conventional seven-seat layout in a two-three-two configuration.
VW says the mid-sized vehicle achieves 2.1litres/100km when using power from the lithium-ion battery and engine in the European test cycle or 6.7 litres from the diesel donk alone.
“With the CrossBlue we offer one of the most fuel-efficent cars ever with the practicality of a mid-sized SUV and the (fuel) consumption of a compact city car,” Hackenberg says. Total output from the 2.0-litre engine and pair of motors is around 225kW/700Nm and VW says the car will sprint from rest to 100km/h in 7.5 seconds.
A 9.8kW battery can drive the rear electric motor for up to 33km in electric vehicle mode, while all-wheel drive is achieved by using the engine to power the front wheels and operate the front motor as a generator to power the rear motor. Confusing, but VW says it is an effective and efficient way to manage propulsion.
The 5m long CrossBlue is larger than the Touareg but will be priced below VW’s premium SUV as it chases mainstream American buyers.
The Toyota Kluger and Hyundai Santa Fe are obvious rivals and the biggest issue will be how long it takes VW to put the car into showrooms to tap into the growing demand for SUVs with three-row seating.
Of more interest to Australians will be whether VW expands its vision for the car to global markets and builds right-drive versions, or whether it will be, as conceived, an American-only proposition.

I told myself I'd never drive a minivan. Then you drive one with kids in it -- it's amazing. 3 TV screens, 2 DVD players, auto side doors, auto rear hatch, auto seats that go up and down into the floor, heated everything, cup holders everywhere, ample seating for 2 car seats, 5 large adults, 2 full size strollers stacked in the trunk + luggage, full size jogging stroller, roll up window shades inside, etc...

You get the point. Life is stressful enough, anything that now lessens the stress is a blessing. Carrying a kid on your hip, holding two coffees and a heavy grocery bag, in a tight parking spot where you couldn't even open your door if it was a swing open -- press of a button the side door slides opens.

Trust me, selling my FX was one of the hardest decisions, but going to Andy and the fact my wife has been begging for a minivan -- I've made the greatest choice for this exact moment in my life.

Will I drive this thing forever? No, kids that can open doors, get in, and buckle themselves, the minivan is GONE, and QX56, JX35, FX50S, etc... here I come.

Until then, my VW Routan has been my greatest purchase.

If you are going to have 2 kids, you'll need 3 rows for those times where the in-laws, friends, parents, etc... come along to stuff. It's so much nicer to have your parents/friends in the same car when you go to the zoo, dinner, etc... than to take two cars -- not a big deal, but to me it is important since I live in Chicago where parking is a premium and traffic is crazy.

you always make due of the space you have, I have friends that have three kids and their only car is a toyota corolla. Just get the car you like.

Well said Ed. I remember once you have said on here that you would never drive a minivan. Look at what you just said above :good:. Jonas, are you taking notes?
I bet those thoughts never cross your mind back then. Its all valid now at this stage in your live to realized how convenience a minivan to a growing family. I got my Sienna when my second daughter was born. The power sliding doors and trunk are awesome for wife and kids. Loading and unloading the stroller(s) in my case a double stroller was a breeze due to its low trunk opening. Oh yeah cup holders, never enough! :smile (2): The grand parents and friends are always looking forward to be in the van with kids each time we go out for dinner.

When time comes to replace my Sienna, it won't be a minivan that's for sure!
