simple question that may be shocking to most of you But How Do I Completely Silence My Stock '03 Exhaust? im really sick of noise on super long trips from the continuous droning sound the stock exhaust gives -i need the fx to have no sounds like a prius, but not give up performance. ill take any insight. thanks.

Add another resonator. Or add dynamat to the hatch floor. Both will help, but it will never be a prius. Maybe buy a hybrid?

It's probably just leaking(flange between mid-pipe and muffler, common problem). when was last time you checked out your exhaust?

Seriously, stock exhaust was sounding nice and exotic. Add a resonator between the mid pipe and muffler is all that you can do. You will be the first on such mod for sure :smile (2):

The stock resonator is meant to reduce a very specific frequency, to tune the sound. Replace it with the largest and longest muffler your exhaust guy can fit. Mine is 14x9x5, and it could have been bigger...

ok so if i replace the muffler with a much larger muffler that will reduce the noise....? sounds good enough.

Consider you are the only person on IS to ever post such a thing. Personally I think you are 1) way too sensitive 2) have unrealistic expectations or 3) will never be happy with the car no matter what you do.

Sell it and get something that meets your needs, which I doubt you will ever find. Good luck.

i drive my car from GA to NYC, then to Chicago then back to GA, 2-3 times a year. not sensitive, sometimes when your in a car for 12 hours straight, music is off -all you want is silence. this is not a big deal to be unrealistic about, simple question. Very Happy with my car since i bought it brand new in 2003 & have driven past 142k miles on it & it was so perfect that i have never done a single mod to it. this could be the first. thanks for your insight though:dazed:

Yes. I doubt it will ever sound like a Prius, but increasing the size and quality of that resonator will absolutely make it quieter.

When I was having my system built I went through three resonators (and no resonator for a while), and in that experience I found the volume level at the tips to be almost directly linked to the size of the muffler(s). Location and construction have more of an effect on tone.

Although i do think the OE system is one of the best tuned systems I have heard in our price range I get what you are asking. The larger muffler will help, larger inline resonators will help and I'd take the time to sound deaden the rear hatch area, the back seats and the doors. The sound deadening will help with some of the exhaust penetration but you will really notice it in road noise.....excellent for long trips.

Even the Prius engine will make decent noise when running on gas. For full quiet, you'll need full electric. When you drive a full electric car, the only noise you hear is wind noise and road noise. Very serene. There are companies that will perform a conversion to full electric.
Don't forget Dynomat too.

sound deadening should be enough with what you are looking for....there have been members here that have have done over the top sound deadoning and basically you can hear a pin drop and this is maybe what you are after.
