Loud THUD noise from rear

Guys,

Got a 2012 FX 35 and quite happy with it so far for most part. But today morning wasn't good. I had my gear shifted to R and as I pressed the gas pedal to take the car out of the garage the RPM just moved up and nothing happened - as if the car was in N mode! I made sure the parking brake was not set and it wasnt; went around to make sure there is nothing behind the tires that is blocking and tried again. But again same result - it just rev'ed up but refused to move in reverse. I didn't have any issue in shifting from N to R or D though. I then moved to D mode and as I pressed the accelerator there was real loud THUD noise from the rear wheel - likely one from rear driver side wheel and then it started to move forward. I then shifted to R and then it started to move back!

It scared the hell out of me and I am still! I took it to the dealer to check it out and they just called and said they didnt find anything. But clearly something was just not right this morning. Make me think i must have just towed it to the dealership instead of trying various at first place when it refused to move. I was hoping not to have any of these issues and precisely why I didnt go for BMW/Audi after reading their reliability report. I had a Nissan 2002 and was quite happy with it and traded that for this FX 35 - but I am not sure if I did the right think as I now read several transmission downshift/accelration issues on the FX! :(

Also, as I think about the only thing I did over this weekend (before parking the car in garage) was to was the car and as I washed the wheels with long wheel brush I remember hitting some break caliper / pad behind the wheels..Could that have caused it? I hope not since I am planning on washing the car myself!

Has anyone experienced this or was it just a freak incident?

Thanks
Anand

Probably just a freak accident bro. I had this happen to me once a long time ago. I put the car in reverse and push the accelerator and it wouldn't go. I found out the gear shift wasn't in the right position and that it wasn't in the reverse actually even though it said it on the screen. Was my fault though since I didn't move the shifter into the reverse position fully. Never had a problem after that.

One thing though if you ever park on something slightly slanted or inclined always put on the parking brake otherwise it will make the transmission clunk when switching from park to drive and reverse and so on.

I think your looking into things too much. The FX is a really reliable car. Plus your car is brand new man no need to worry.

this has happened to my fx before, as fireonice said the gear shifter is not actually set right therefore the tranny doesnt engage.

I can see that and makes sense...but did you also hear a big THUD when put in D mode?

Yes that sometimes happen when you don't set the parking brake on even the slightest incline and you go to drive it makes a loud thunk or thud. It also can happen when you don't release the shift lock properly. Dude it's normal lol don't worry.

I could even replicate it for you in a video but I prefer not to since it sounds hard on the transmission.

By the way use this procedure next time:

Ok next time I need help or have an issue I think other IS member should know about I'll keep my mouth shut.

no hard feelings Aaron I hope...it's all in good fun. We know how extra careful you are with your FX and so when you mention to another member they are looking into it too much, it was just funny. We know how much you love yours and make sure every little knick and cranny is absolutely perfect. I hope I didn't offend....that was not the intent. If I did, I am sincerely sorry.

Thanks for the info. Just that I have not heard any such loud THUD noise I wanted to make sure I didnt do any damage to tranny or something.

Thanks again..

This sucks! I have to reopen this thread :(

I am having the same exact roblem again - I am just not able to take my car out of garage once again and AGAIN this happens after I did a car wash yesterday evening and parked in garage. I am not sure if cleaning the wheels with the brush is causing something here..Being Sunday today I am stuck that I am not even able to take it to a dealer by calling infiniti road side assistance.

The car just refuses to move, I am 100% sure the parking brakes are released and the car is in R mode, but pressing the accelerator just revs'up as the car tries to move back but just shakes and stands there. I dont want to force like I did last time where there was this huge loud THUD noise before something gave up in D mode and then I was able to take in R. Man..this sucks...happening again and I am narrowing it down to something that is going on during/after car wash esp. with the whees where I use a long brush to clean the inside of wheel rims. I did look at it visually and to my eyes could not find anything unusual...but my eyes are not trained for these :(

How can I take the car out today or am I just stuck till I can tow in tomorrow? Last time I thought it was some one-off thing but not now and it happens again :(

What else can I look at under the wheels or is it something else...cr@p...

Sorry had to vent it out since I had to take kids to lots of places today and now thats not gonna happen :(

Thanks
Anand

Edit: Makes me think if it has to do with moisture overnight after the wash and should I be driving the car in the block a for a few minutes after wash?

I believe in everything you are saying but after all this is a CAR and an SUV
alil car wash should not be the factor of this issue... or i hope....
hope you get it resolved soon and hope you find the problem.

take a video, as your shift and the car fails to move;for the dealer. Also you can try putting it into neutral and slamming your brakes few times. After ask a friend to push it out of ur garage

The pads are sticking to the rusty rotor after you wash it. I had this problem before on another vehicle.

After you wash, drive it it around the block to dry off the pads and rotors. Otherwise, it can actually warp your rotors after enough occurrences.
