How to Clean Both Throttle Bodies

I notice mine will cold start around 1700-1800 RPM on a warm day after sitting overnight. But if it's below 40 outside it cold starts around 2100 RPM. Seems pretty normal due to the cold weather.....

Ah ok...I was just thinking something was off when you mentioned 2100. Haven't payed attention when it was freezing outside.

I did this on my 50, today to get the tb off on it wasn't a Allen key it was a 8mm socket ...I disconected the negative cable while I was working on the car and I fully opened the butterfly with my hands and cleaned it(it was really dirty)..it was really easy my car feels like the day I got it again...put everything back together and start it up and it idles so nice you don't know its running....thanks for the write up fire...I will be doing this again ....

Hey no problem brotha!

I guess we can make a note that the FX50 throttle body is a socket bolt instead of an allen bolt. FX35 is an allen bolt though.

Good job man!:top:

By the way you should of taken some pics for us to see how dirty they were. I recommend cleaning them every 10-15K miles or whenever you change the air filters just for the hell of it. :smile (2):

I took some pics of the towel after ill post them later....it was pretty dirty ...I thought for sure my idle would of been crazy I was really rough with the butterfly ....I also cleaned the air box and the filters.

so looks like removing the negative battery, you can move the butterfly with your fingers as much as need to get it perfectly squeaky clean! :))

I need to do this really soon.. Just debating on the butterfly... To touch or not to touch, that is the question.

Try the negative battery disconnect first then do it.

I came across a thread on G35driver where the guy did it on his 08 G35 sedan by opening the butterfly valve and it ended up screwing up the idle. After attempting idle relearn and throttle position relearn he couldn't get it to reset. Took it to the dealer and the ECM wouldn't accept the throttle/idle relearn. Ended up having to replace both throttle bodies.

I'll try to find that thread later. But after reading that thread I decided it would be best for me not to touch them just to be on the safe side. 2 new throttle bodies are over $1K.

I have PERSONALLY cleaned mine several times and never had any trouble with the relearn procedures. The stellar advice I read regarding how to handle the butterfly valves is to "treat them like they are made of very thin glass". The TB is not a complicated or exceedingly sensitive piece of equipment (a servo and a couple sensors), just be reasonably careful with them and you'll be fine. Disconnecting the negative terminal is never a bad idea when pulling any engine components.

Cleaned my throttle bodies again today but wanted to clean under the butterfly valve this time as suggested by Tchuck. So with some advice I just disconnected the battery and did it. Before actually cleaning under the butterfly valve I first took off the throttle body and discovered it's completely black all over again!! Whats up with that? I've probably put only a thousand miles on it since the last cleaning. Anyone know what what cause that? I did add in 2 bottles of Chevron Techron fuel cleaner about a month ago. Maybe that cleaned all the carbon out and clogged the throttle bodies?

Anyway under the butterfly valve it was really dirty!

What it looked like again:

The other side was actually worse. It was completely black.

What the towel looked like after opening the valve this time.

Very happy with this. After cleaning the engine is even smoother than before. The shaking I was having during idle went away and the engine doesn't feel rough. No problems with the idle too after cleaning it. Guess disconnecting the battery helps so it doesn't forget the throttle position, idle, and closed valve memory.

Nice Aaron. I hope pulling the negative is enough to avoid issues. Did you lose the presets?

Actually haven't checked the presets lol. But I did lose the seat, mirror, and steering wheel memory settings.

No idle surging issues after cleaning so I guess the battery disconnect works.

Nice job. The black stuff on both sides of your TB is probably residual oil from when you had the K&N air filters installed. :p

so your saying disconnect the negative cable from batter to avoid TB issues when cleaning them?
