Strange Noise

Hi all,

A while back, I requested a little assistance from you all in efforts to determine the cause of a sound (rubbing/low griding - maybe a little knocking) come from the front driver side. The suggestion was that it may be coming from the hub. Well, as of today, I did the hub R/R and unfortunately, the sound is still there. Now mind you, I only hear this noise when going from a stop to start position. It quickly goes away and I don't hear anything at medium or higher speeds. Nor do I hear it when going in reverse.

I am willing to provide any more details if needed in order to help figure this out. I am trying to get her tuned up for a cross country and I don't want something to fail me half way there. Hoping you all can help

maybe somthing is loose ... i would suggest you have a look under the car to see if there is anything loos below the engine bay ... you may not be hearing the grinding noise at higher speeds since the object that may be loose is traveling fast ... the sound may of disappeared bcuz of that ... or it could be somthing to do with the drivetrain that is close to the drivers side ... somthing may not be properly lubricated ....then again these are just my suggestions on that ... good luck on finding wat the problem is

Thanks. I will definitely go through some review of the underside. Gonna have to do a little research on here for things you mentioned. I appreciate the point in a direction!

Mod, could you please move this to the drivetrain subforum.

we have the same model and year, move your front tires to the rear, see if the sound follows to rear. Also check to see if the radiator fan is loose and something is scraping it.
Where cali do you live?

if its coming from the hub area check the rotor to make sure it is even. This may sound ridiculous but it would explain a lower speed rub grinding noise against the pad and caliper. or it could be an uneven pad.

think about this, at a lower speed with city braking the pads could be knicking the rotor and eventually being pushed aside. at highway speeds the pad gets pushed away from an uneven rotor almost instantly, causing minimal sound. just a thought, good luck

also could be a loud pulley bearing? maybe your belts were put on too tight and warped the bearing

^^^^ Yea i agree ... i had the sa,e exact problem with my rotor a few months back ... i think i warped it or somthing ... i changed out the pads ... but still had the same problem ... now im running on the fx50 frnt brakes ... much better

at low speeds the grinding noise was there .. but dissapeared at higher speeds

Thanks for your responses. I may have described the noise incorrectly. The only time I hear it is when I press the gas from a complete stop and only if I press it fast. If I ease onto the gas, I don't hear anything. It is similar to an issure that another member (lexfx) had. Nothing ever came up on the site to his issue though. I have contacted him offsite, still was hoping someoe had some ideas.

thats what i was thinking motor mounts, i replaced mine 3 times.. To test it, have a friend look at the engine from outside while you brake and gas.. the engine should hop

also when my motor mounts went bad, my car was a little wobbly, and slight vibrations while accelerating from 0

Good call on the mount. That makes sense. It would give off crazy vibrations. If bad, the rubber will look worn and cracked. Or, a bolt could be loose. If the rubber part looks okay, you might be able to wedge a big slotted screw driver between the steel part of the mount and the frame. If there is any movement, the motor mount bolt might be broken.
If it is a motor mount, fix it sooner than later. Those vibrations can cause all kinds of other nasty stuff.

Motor Mounts

So, I did a visual inspection this week-end and took a couple of snap shots. Didn't see any noticable issues, but maybe to the trained eye of IS..

Camera Phone..sorry about quality..

looks ok, do you see any dry fluid, around the rubber, there hyrdo mounts.. Also do the brake gas, brake reverse.. See if one side moves abnormally high. Also when fully stopped, while shifting from reverse to drive; do you feel like your car is shaking?
